When Toby Collyer could make his West Brom debut after Manchester United transfer latest

West Brom are on the verge of signing Manchester United’s Toby Collyer on a season-long loan.

The defensive midfielder will become Ryan Mason’s first loan signing of the summer after West Brom missed out on several Tottenham youngsters.

The Baggies have so far prioritised permanent transfers, with Aune Heggebo, Nat Phillips, and George Campbell signing, all making The Hawthorns their new home.

However, Collyer offers plenty of talent, and Albion supporters are already wondering when he could make his first appearance in the blue and white shirt.

Collyer could make his debut against Portsmouth

Collyer’s loan signing could be a sign of things to come for West Brom in the coming weeks of the transfer window.

Notably, opportunities to sign Premier League youngsters on loan come later in the window, as they did in January when West Brom signed Tottenham’s Will Lankshear.

The Spurs youngster had a turbulent time in the West Midlands, but supporters will be hoping that Collyer will bed in more easily.

The Man United youngster is unlikely to replace the midfield duo of Jason Molumby and Alex Mowatt straight away, so he isn’t expected to start the Championship clash at Wrexham on 16 August.

Collyer will have to work hard to displace the experienced duo, but he has already shown at Old Trafford that he has a calm head on his shoulders for a 21-year-old.

However, given the Baggies’ lack of depth in midfield, he could come on as a substitute against the Welsh side to shore things up in midfield, should they be in the lead.

A first start for Collyer could come against Portsmouth on 23 August, with The Albion forced to keep their midfield fresh.

Mowatt could find gametime limited after Collyer’s arrival

Mowatt has had a turbulent time at The Hawthorns.

He struggled during his debut season, but a loan move to Middlesbrough in 2022/23 put his
career back on track, despite limited gametime on Teesside.

The midfielder’s career in the West Midlands again took a slump last season, with Mowatt and
Ousmane Diakite regularly swapping places in the Baggies midfield.

Collyer’s arrival could see his gametime again limited this season, with the youngster not
expected to replace Molumby.
