What Mikey Johnston did in West Brom win vs Wrexham deserves far more attention
West Brom secured a well deserved 3-2 victory against Wrexham at the weekend.
Ryan Mason will be no stranger to the task that awaits him at The Hawthorns, though he has given himself an excellent chance of succeeding with their start to the season.
West Brom’s win away to Wrexham saw them maintain their 100 per cent win record in the Championship, courtesy of goals from Jed Wallace and Isaac Price.
Price scored twice for West Brom, earning a lot of attention, though Mikey Johnston deserves more for what he achieved in the latter stages of the game.

Johnston registered two assists vs Wrexham from three passes
Johnston is in the team to create chances and impact the attacking side of the game for West Brom, and he achieved just that against Phil Parkinson’s side.
Despite only coming on with 18 minutes to go, Johnston registered two assists, meaning he is now just three assists from his total tally from the previous campaign.
However, what is even more impressive is the fact that he attempted just three passes in the game and had just 10 touches of the ball.
Johnston’s record at Albion
- 63 appearances
- 10 goals
- 9 assists
To register two assists from such little involvement is a testament to his ability, and West Brom will be pleased that Johnston’s transfer to Flamengo fell through this summer as a result.
This showcases the impact that the 26-year-old can have this season, and Mason will have somewhat of a headache ahead of the next fixture.

Mason needs to axe Karlan Grant for Johnston
Despite the win, Karlan Grant was pretty ineffective for West Brom, and the game changed when he was replaced by Johnston in the 73rd minute.
Had Wrexham taken their chances, West Brom could have been dead and buried before the Irishman was afforded the chance to impact proceedings.
Going forward, Mason needs to start him wide left and ensure that his creative output is utilised from the start.
Johnston is a player who thrives on confidence, and his confidence will be very high after his latest feat.
