West Brom’s promotion chances shift dramatically in damning assessment by supercomputer

West Brom are now more likely to be relegated than finish in the top two after the latest defeat to Charlton Athletic.

West Brom were defeated 1-0 at The Valley on Tuesday in another poor performance.

Ryan Mason has consistently come under scrutiny at West Brom recently, as the Black Country club continue to slip down the table.

Despite West Brom being seen as contenders for the Championship title just months ago, it is now deemed incredibly unlikely by Opta on 5 November.

West Brom now have a 4.94% chance of being relegated

After the defeat to Charlton saw the Baggies slip to 14th in the Championship, they are now four points off the playoffs, with multiple teams around them having games in hand.

However, the loss was no longer surprising, with Mason overseeing an awful run of results over the past month.

Now, this has been reflected in Opta’s latest prediction of how the Championship table will finish at the end of the season.

As it stands, West Brom are predicted to finish 13th, with an expected points total of 61.86.

The chances of the Baggies winning the league are now just 0.58 per cent, while automatic promotion is 2.14 per cent.

In comparison, the odds of relegation have now increased to 4.94 per cent, meaning that a drop to League One is now more likely than finishing in the top two.

However, the chances of promotion via the playoffs remain solid at 12.64 per cent.

Ryan Mason: I take responsibility for Charlton defeat

The defeat to Charlton was another damning performance and loss, with the Addicks only returning to the Championship this season.

As a result, the London club have now pushed into the playoffs, while the Baggies dip further down the table.

Speaking after the game, Mason told West Brom on 4 November that he takes the responsibility for the defeat.

“It’s another loss and it’s not good enough,” he stated.

“Ultimately, the responsibility is on me. At the moment, I’m not doing enough to get enough from the players.

“I feel like the players put the effort in today. We were there; we were in the game.

We had opportunities in both halves that we needed to make count and we didn’t,” Mason explained.

“To concede how we did right at the end is a reflection on me and what I’m trying to create here, and at the moment, it’s certainly not good enough,” the Albion boss added.
