Callum Wilson to West Brom ticks every box after surprise West Ham transfer news

Callum Wilson could soon be leaving West Ham, and that should pique West Brom’s interest.

Ryan Mason is under huge pressure at West Brom, as the first-time manager is running out of time to turn things around at The Hawthorns.

West Brom travel to Leicester City on Monday night, hoping to put an end to a miserable run of form that has seen them pick up just one win from their last four games, with three defeats in that time period.

Sporting director Andrew Nestor has revealed that Albion are looking for value deals in the transfer market this month, as they continue to operate under financial constraints following on from Guochuan Lai’s ownership.

As such, West Brom are likely to be scouring the loan and free agent markets, as well as hunting for bargain buys, and one prime opportunity may have just arisen for them.

West Brom handed can’t-miss Callum Wilson opportunity

One area of the pitch that Albion could be looking to bolster this month is in attack, and more specifically, a striker.

Aune Heggebo has taken to life in the Championship well, scoring eight goals in 25 games ahead of the Leicester game, but the weight of West Brom’s goalscoring is largely on his shoulders.

Josh Maja has been linked with a move away from West Brom this month, as the 27-year-old has just one goal in 20 league outings this term, and is out of contract in the summer.

Therefore, adding another centre-forward to the mix could be a very wise move indeed, with perhaps a more experienced and proven presence required in that department.

As per The Athletic on Monday, Callum Wilson is in talks to leave West Ham this month, despite only signing for the Hammers on a one-year contract at the start of this season.

It’s not yet clear whether he’s looking for a mutual termination of his contract so that he can control his own future on the free agent market, or whether he’s simply putting in a transfer request, but either way, West Brom must be alerted to this development.

Why Wilson to West Brom makes so much sense

Despite being 33, a fit and firing Wilson is still a very classy player, not least if he was playing at Championship level.

The England international has scored four goals in 18 total appearances for the Hammers this season, but previously fired home 49 times in 130 games for Newcastle United.

He would be an excellent foil to Heggebo, both in the physical sense, offering Mason a target man as well as a smaller, poacher-type striker in Wilson, and in the ability to contrast relative youthfulness with a veteran presence.

On top of this, and perhaps crucially to West Brom’s chances of signing him if they are to be interested, Wilson hails from the Midlands, having been born in Coventry in February 1992.

Therefore, a move back to the region may be very attractive for him to see out his twilight years as a player, and with West Brom 10 points off the play-offs, his arrival could be the catalyst for a considerable increase in goals and wins, enough to potentially see Albion mount a top six charge over the final months of the season.

So, as long as his wage demands are reasonable, then West Brom should push the boat out to capture Wilson’s signature this month.
