West Brom: Relegation odds shift as Championship rivals plunged into trouble

West Bromwich Albion are now strong favourites to stay in the Championship.

James Morrison’s side secured their second win in a row with a 1-0 victory at Bristol City on Saturday, in what was their first triumph on the road since October.

George Campbell’s header, coupled with the results around them, sent West Brom four points clear of the bottom three with seven games to go.

They have now picked up two wins and two draws from their last four games, with caretaker manager Morrison doing a stellar job so far.

West Brom are still a long way from Championship safety, but they are now being tipped to stay in the division at a handful of other teams’ expense.

West Brom’s future looks far less bleak

After the latest round of results, Oxford United and Leicester City are level on 39 points, with already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday languishing behind on minus six.

Portsmouth are just one point ahead of the relegation zone, but they do have a game in hand, and West Brom are level on points with Blackburn Rovers on 43.

The James Morrison effectScoreline
Sheffield United vs West Brom (7 March)1-1
West Brom vs Southampton (11 March)1-1
West Brom vs Hull City (14 March)3-0
Bristol City vs West Brom (21 March)0-1

In this four-game unbeaten run, West Brom have drawn with sixth-placed Southampton, who are on a division-best 12-match unbeaten streak, and thrashed play-off contenders Hull.

Conversely, Leicester have won just one of their last six league games, Portsmouth have picked up one point from a possible 18, while Oxford’s three-game winning run was followed up by a draw and a loss.

And according to major bookmakers, West Brom are being backed to stay up, but Oxford and Portsmouth are not so lucky.

Oxford and Portsmouth are being predicted to go down at 3/5 and 11/10, respectively, with Leicester backed to survive at 3/2.

West Brom are also being forecast to finish 19th ahead of Blackburn, which they’d take in a heartbeat.

Morrison enhancing his legendary West Brom status

Morrison played nearly 350 times for West Brom between 2007 and 2019, scoring 39 goals along the way.

The former Scotland international helped West Brom achieve two Championship promotions and won their Player of the Year award in 2015.

The 39-year-old is currently in his third caretaker stint at West Brom, and this one is proving to be his most vital.

A total of eight points from five games is an excellent return for a team that hadn’t won in the league since 29 December.

Doubts were cast over whether West Brom should have looked for a more experienced manager to guide them to safety.

But so far, West Brom seem well placed to beat the drop under his stewardship.
