James Morrison’s West Brom to-do list over international break, including fixing Aune Heggebo woes

James Morrison has a lot of work to do at West Bromwich Albion during the international break, even if results have improved massively of late.

The Baggies have won their last two Championship matches, and there is renewed optimism among the fans that they can avoid relegation.

West Brom’s 1-0 win over Bristol City moved them up to 19th place in the table, as they sit four points clear of the drop zone with seven games left to play this season.

Morrison has done a phenomenal job in B71, and he has been rightly lauded for turning around the Baggies’ awful run of form.

While West Brom look set to avoid relegation, the ex-Baggies midfielder still has some issues to address, particularly with what’s happened to Aune Heggebo’s form.

James Morrison needs to get the best out of Aune Heggebo

Heggebo joined West Brom for £4.75million from Norwegian side Brann, and it’s safe to say that it has taken him a while to find his feet.

According to Sofascore, Heggebo has an xG underperformance of 0.88, and he is certainly not performing to the standards that were expected of him at the start of the season.

Despite being a real threat under Ryan Mason, the 24-year-old has been incredibly quiet in 2026.

He did score a smart goal in the 3-0 win over Hull City, flicking home Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba’s cross, but Morrison still needs a lot more from his star striker.

With nine goals this season, he has been underwhelming, but his new partnership with Josh Maja could work.

Both attackers bring something different to the front line, and now the squad is playing with a bit of confidence, Heggebo will need some individual training to up his game.

If this works, Morrison will be able to get the best out of Heggebo, who clearly has a lot of potential.

Morrison has Ollie Bostock dilemma to address

The 19-year-old scored the winning penalty in West Brom’s FA Cup third-round penalty shootout win over Swansea in January, and fans have been calling for him to start ever since.

Morrison brought Ollie Bostock on for Mikey Johnston against Oxford United in February, and it’s safe to say he made an impact, scoring a long-range strike to drag the Baggies back into the match.

He was impressive on the left wing and sent out a message to his head coach that he should be one of the first names on the team sheet, which then resulted in his first start against Sheffield United earlier in March.

However, Bostock has been left on the bench for the last three games, despite being one of West Brom’s most dangerous assets in the final third.

Morrison has to keep the Baggies in the Championship at all costs, but there’s no reason why he can’t earn more first-team minutes over Isaac Price.

And West Brom fans would love to see Bostock on the pitch more often.

Morrison needs one of his players to replace Mikey Johnston’s output

Johnston suffered a stress fracture to his ankle in a 2-1 loss to Oxford United in February.

It’s a huge loss for the Baggies as they’ve lost arguably their greatest attacker at such a crucial period of the campaign.

The Republic of Ireland international has nine assists for Albion this season, which is five more than any other player in the squad.

Morrison needs his wide players to step up, and in fairness, Jed Wallace has been brilliant.

However, if West Brom want to avoid relegation in a comfortable fashion, they’ll need someone to consistently perform to fill the void that Johnston has left, and it’s up to Morrison to find a successful formula.
