West Brom Women: Simran Jhamat sends ‘fight and desire’ message ahead of Wolves derby

West Bromwich Albion Women are preparing to head to Molineux on Sunday, as they face Black Country rivals Wolves in the FAWNL Northern Premier.

Sunday’s clash will be the fifth meeting between the two sides this term, with the Baggies looking to get revenge after losing to their rivals in the Birmingham Challenge Cup earlier this month.

Siobhan Hodgetts-Still’s side climbed up to fifth place in the standings last time out, after dispatching Sporting Khalsa 6-0 at The Hawthorns.

Wolves do pose a significant challenge, though, with Dan McNamara’s side vying for the title against Burnley, having already secured at least a play-off spot heading into the season’s final weeks.

As Albion look to repeat their FAWNL Cup win against Wolves in January, forward Simran Jhamat has emphasised the importance of building on the recent 6-0 win.

Simran Jhamat reflects on West Brom form ahead of Wolves clash

Starting for the first time in the league since October, Jhamat impressed against Sporting Khalsa.

“We had struggled in front of goal a fair bit before Sunday,” she said. “So to get six is really good.”

“We’d been working on set-pieces too, so for Lucy (Day) to get her head on two was fantastic. We were very strong in possession, and we just want to keep building from here. We could’ve had more goals, but we did what we could, and it all comes down to that final pass.”

Starting for the first time since the Baggies’ 3-0 win against Derby last calendar year, Jhamat admitted that Sunday’s clash was a good chance to prove herself.

“To get my first start in a while, I was really happy, and I thought I played well. I feel like I’ve proved myself over the last month or so, and I’m hitting the ground running when I get the chance,” she said.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the forward outlined how important it is that Hodgetts-Still’s side match their recent performance levels.

“We’re always going to be up for the derby this weekend,” said Jhamat. “We’re always raring to go, and we’re always especially excited for it to come, especially with it at Molineux.

“It provides that opportunity to show fight and desire, which we’ll always give on the day as well,” she concluded.

Wolves test awaits as West Brom look to extend winning run

Sunday’s clash presents the biggest league test in weeks for the Baggies, with rivals Wolves enjoying another strong season at the top end of the division.

McNamara’s side are the league’s leading scorers with 59 goals, while Amber Hughes and Charlotte Greengrass remain among the top goalscorers – netting 19 and 13 times respectively.

West Brom have suffered against multiple sides at the top end of the standings recently, losing 3-0 away at both Burnley and Stoke prior to the recent uptick in form.

Naturally, derby day is different. The Baggies have proven capable of defeating their rivals away from home this season and will be out for revenge following the recent semi-final loss.

With four matches remaining, Hodgetts-Still’s side could set themselves up for a strong end to the campaign, with a big win against their nemesis at Molineux.
