West Brom are not a ‘League One’ club – history shows they’re a Premier League one

West Bromwich Albion fans have been up in arms over claims that they are a League One club in stature.

According to Tottenham fan and YouTuber Danny Aarons, West Brom are not even in the top 50 when it comes to England’s biggest clubs.

This comes at a time when the Baggies are 20th in the Championship, just two places and four points above the relegation zone.

While they have had a wretched season, encompassing the sackings of Eric Ramsay and Ryan Mason, that should not tarnish their storied history.

Ahead of West Brom returning to action on Friday against Wrexham, West Brom News has decided to give Aarons a bit of a history lesson.

West Brom’s history deserves more respect

In an episode of Pitch Side Tweets, Aarons – who has 1.9million subscribers on his YouTube channel – appeared on the show and went on a bizarre rant about West Brom’s standing in the game.

He said: “You think [Tottenham] are the same level as you? Oh, so we’re above you? That’s where you belong [in League One].

“You’re at your level, what did you do in the Premier League? When you were in the Premier League, what did you do? What did you win?

“What have you done ever? What trophies have you won? You can give it but you can’t take it. [West Brom are] a Championship club at max, and you think you’re Premier League?

Many West Brom fans were in disbelief over his ahistorical remarks and here’s why.

When it comes to total trophies won in English football, West Brom are 16th, just behind Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday.

They are 12th when it comes to domestic cups won (with six). In the Championship, only Blackburn Rovers have won more FA Cups (six) than the Baggies.

West Brom have spent 81 seasons in the English top-flight, the 11th-best in the country. That dwarfs the likes of West Ham, Leeds, Wolves, Nottingham Forest, and more.

They aren’t far behind Tottenham on 90, either. Moreover, since the turn of the century, West Brom have had 13 seasons in the Premier League. So, take note, Aarons.

West Brom want to avoid unwanted history

Unfortunately for West Brom, history means nothing when you’re scrapping in a relegation battle.

West Brom have enjoyed a resurgence under caretaker manager James Morrison, with the Baggies winning two games in a row to open up daylight between them and the bottom three.

Their victory at Bristol City was their first away win in the Championship since October, with West Brom now four unbeaten in the league.

But they cannot rest on their laurels as they aim to stave off relegation to the English third tier, a place they haven’t been since 1991.

Next up, West Brom host play-off chasing Wrexham on Friday in a crunch clash at The Hawthorns.

If they can win that, Baggies fans will well and truly believe they can rescue this forgettable season.
