Ousmane Diakite’s Mali debut analysed: West Brom star shines on international bow
Ousmane Diakite made his debut for Mali in their 0-0 draw against Russia after his brilliant recent form for West Bromwich Albion.
The 25-year-old has been a standout performer for James Morrison’s side in recent weeks, and that led to a fully deserved call-up to the Eagles squad.
The former TSV Hartberg ace came on in the 64th minute, but he could not help his side to break the deadlock in the friendly.
The clash at the Gazprom Arena on 31 March ended goalless, with neither side able to put the ball past the opposition goalkeepers.
West Brom have seen the best of Diakite lately, and that continued on the international stage as he made his bow for the national team.

How did Diakite perform on Mali debut?
Diakite signed a new contract with West Brom recently, and that looks fully justified after his development in the last few weeks.
He continued to shine, with a composed display after he came on for Mamadou Maiga with 26 minutes left to play.
The Hawthorns ace completed 83 per cent of the six passes that he attempted, and was especially comfortable with the ball in his own half, per Sofascore.
| Diakite’s stats vs Russia | |
| Pass accuracy | 83% |
| Pass accuracy in own half | 100% |
| Touches | 10 |
| Lost possession | 2 |
| Ground duels won | 1/1 (100%) |
In that area, he completed all three passes, for a 100 per cent success rate, showing the composure that we have seen in the Black Country.
He took 10 touches in his brief cameo, losing possession just two times, further highlighting how good he can be on the ball.
Defensively, he attempted one tackle, which was not successful and won the only ground duel that he contested.
It is a shame that he never got more time to show what he can do, but he equipped himself well for future chances with his country.
Why Diakite will be crucial to West Brom’s survival hopes
Morrison needs Diakite to step up in the next few weeks, if his side are to avoid relegation to League One.
He has been solid at the base of midfield, but there is another level that he can find, and he must do so in the final few weeks.

The Baggies are just four points above the drop zone, with seven matches left to play until the season concludes, and Diakite’s form will be crucial to their survival.
They need him to sweep up the ball when teams try to attack and start the play going the other way, which he has shown that he can do.
