West Brom vs Wrexham: This is why James Morrison will feel optimistic ahead of Championship clash
West Bromwich Albion return to action when they host Wrexham at The Hawthorns in Friday’s Championship clash.
The Baggies emphatically beat Hull City 3-0 in their last match at The Hawthorns, ending their dreadful winless run of 13 league games.
West Brom followed that up with a 1-0 win over Bristol City, and James Morrison‘s side now sit four points clear of the drop zone in 20th place with only seven games left to play.
Up next for the Black Country outfit is a home clash against Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham, who sit seventh in the table and are chasing a fourth successive promotion.
West Brom can’t afford to lose against Wrexham, but Morrison will feel confident as some promising stats have emerged ahead of the clash.

West Brom should feel confident of beating Wrexham
This is West Brom’s first-ever home league game against Wrexham.
The Baggies won the reverse fixture 3-2 in August, and have done the double over each of the last four opponents they’ve faced for the first time in a league campaign.
This hasn’t happened since they did the double over Scunthorpe (2007-08), Colchester (2006-07), Gillingham (2000-01) and AFC Wimbledon (2000-01).
| Head-to-head | Result |
| West Brom wins | 2 |
| Draws | 0 |
| Wrexham wins | 1 |
The Baggies also won 2-1 in the Watney Cup, a short-lived competition in the 1970s, while the Welsh outfit prevailed in an FA Cup meeting in 1930.
West Brom have won their last two league games, as many as they had in their previous 19.
They’ve kept a clean sheet in these wins, and the last time they won three in a row without conceding came in September 2024.

Although it will be a tough feat to achieve, Morrison can take pride in these stats and knows that his players will have enough to secure a first league win over Wrexham at The Hawthorns.
Why Wrexham will prove to be a tough test for West Brom
Wrexham have won 11 of their 17 league games since Christmas, with only Norwich (12) winning more in the Championship in that time.
Parkinson’s men have come alive in 2026, and although they remain out of the playoffs on goal difference, they have a huge chance of making the playoffs.
Only Hull City (14.6 per cent) have a higher shot conversion rate than Wrexham (13.6 per cent) in the Championship this season, with the Welsh side ranking fifth for goals (60) but only 19th for total shots (440).

Josh Griffiths, who is expected to start, will have to be at his best in the West Brom goal, as the likes of Sam Smith and Nathan Broadhead will offer a dangerous threat for the visitors.
Friday’s meeting has all the hallmarks of a brilliant match, and while the Baggies aren’t necessarily the favourites, they do have the quality to stifle Wrexham’s attack.
