West Brom: Daryl Dike’s ‘shocking’ miss vs Wrexham weighed up as criticism laid bare online
West Bromwich Albion came agonisingly close to beating Wrexham in their 2-2 draw as Daryl Dike‘s last-minute miss sent waves of frustration through the Baggies fanbase.
James Morrison‘s side threw away a 2-0 lead at The Hawthorns on Good Friday, as the draw may be seen as points dropped from an Albion perspective.
The Baggies are still firmly in a relegation battle, with the Black Country Club still four points from safety after 22nd-placed Leicester City’s comeback draw against Preston North End.
Morrison brought Dike on for goalscorer Josh Maja with less than 20 minutes to go in the game, as the change came so close to paying off.
Dike has yet to score this season, and Albion supporters have been split on whether his miss was as bad as made out, despite the general feeling of frustration.
Was Daryl Dike’s miss terrible, or a good save?
Dike has battled with injury struggles for most of his time at The Hawthorns, which has left supporters resentful of the club’s decision to sign the American for big money in 2022.
The striker has just two goals to his name from the last three campaigns in all competitions, but is growing closer to finally breaking his duck this term.
| Area of game | Stats |
| Minutes played | 18 |
| Shots | 1 |
| Expected goals | 0.73 |
| xG on target | 0.54 |
| FotMob rating | 6.1 |
Dike recorded a 6.1 FotMob rating after not only missing a chance that was worth 0.73 in terms of expected goals, but also completing 0 per cent of his two dribbles.
But it was his miss in the 88th minute, which popular content creator and West Brom fan Tom Garratt called “shocking” on X.
However, some have suggested that Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo actually made it a good save, despite West Brom’s number nine being at point-blank range.
The Wrexham shot-stopper only made three saves in total, and his minus 0.47 for goals prevented suggests he actually had a poor performance, and that most keepers would have made the save to deny Dike.
Where is it going wrong for Dike?
Dike has not been the same player that the Baggies first saw when he joined in 2022. His main attributes consistent of strength and power, two things that have clearly been affected through multiple injuries.
That’s not to say that Albion can’t still see the 25-year-old have success at The Hawthorns, but it may just take time, which isn’t ideal in the current situation.

Dike has an overall FotMob rating of 6.16 for the season, and his expected goals tally is 1.65 after his total 13 shots this campaign.
One important goal for the former Barnsley man could be what it takes for his West Brom career to get going again, but time is running out.
