Ousmane Diakite is West Brom’s new midfield general as he sets tone in survival fight

Ousmane Diakite delivered yet another impressive performance in West Bromwich Albion‘s dire 0-0 draw with Blackburn Rovers on Easter Monday.

In a match of very few chances, Diakite seized control of the midfield at Ewood Park and continued his superb form for the Baggies in their bid to stay in the Championship.

Just days before, the 25-year-old midfielder had made his international debut for Mali during their 0-0 draw with Russia, a deserved reward for his efforts at club level.

But even after jetting back to the UK, he showed no signs of fatigue. Indeed, his latest lung-busting showing was symbolic of Albion’s survival fightback under James Morrison.

Clearly, Diakite was crucial in securing the crucial point, and he deserves credit.

How did Ousmane Diakite play vs Blackburn?

In a significant boon to Albion, Diakite’s future has been tied down at The Hawthorns until 2027 at least, after a clause in his contract was activated by owner Shilen Patel.

It didn’t take him long to repay the club’s faith. Diakite looks to be a different player under Morrison, with his strong showings in midfield contributing to a six-match unbeaten streak.

Against Blackburn, he took 55 touches across the 90 minutes, completing 33 of his 39 passes – an 85 per cent success rate – as well as 15 carries with the ball.

According to Sofascore, the former TSV Hartberg man registered two tackles – with a 100 per cent hit rate – two interceptions, one clearance, two blocked shots and seven recoveries.

He was also dribbled past just once, capping off a dominant display.

Morrison trusts Diakite completely to clean up at the base of his midfield, and his efforts encapsulate the hard work of the entire squad as they look to stay clear of the drop zone.

Finally, Diakite looks to have cemented his spot in the starting XI.

Now, though, he must continue to perform at these lofty levels. While his new deal was a no-brainer, there can be no lowering of standards across Albion’s remaining five fixtures.

If he can keep delivering until the end of the season, Patel and the hierarchy will have one less position to fret about during the summer, as they plot changes to the squad.

But in the short term, Morrison will be over the moon with his new general.
