West Brom: Shilen Patel to look away as ‘highest of all time’ losses pose Championship concern

West Bromwich Albion owner Shilen Patel could have faced losses for the 2024-25 season that have reached a collective Championship high along with other clubs since COVID 19.

The Baggies published their accounts for the last campaign recently, and they stated losses of up to £17million with a total loss, which comes after a £31m in the previous season.

Many other Championship clubs have recorded big losses, and Patel’s group isn’t alone, but things are not looking promising.

Albion are still in a relegation dog fight and dropping to League One would have further financial implications that nobody at the clubs wants.

However, West Brom could still be set for losses in the Championship for years to come as Kieran Maguire analyses the latest round of accounts.

Kieran Maguire shares ‘concern’ among Championship clubs

West Brom know relegation could set them back years, despite many clubs that have made the drop to League One, then made their way back up the following year.

Despite a total of £8.2m in player sales for the 2024-25 season, it couldn’t bring Albion’s overall losses down, which is not a good look on the Profit and Sustainability books.

While speaking on The Price of Football, finance expert Maguire was speaking on the financial state of play in the Championship, as he revealed that there is an internal feeling of worry for clubs after the 2024-25 accounts review.

Maguire said: “Collectively, the concern is that the level of losses in the Championship are going to be the highest of all time, with the possible exception of the COVID year, where there is legitimate justification for incurring significant losses.”

This suggests that things could only be getting worse for clubs in the Championship, which means Patel and Co. must be prepared for more losses in the years to come.

However, as highlighted by former West Brom figure Andrew Nestor, Albion could be set for a brighter future in the financial department, though fans will take these comments with a pinch of salt.

What could West Brom’s 25-26 accounts look like?

The Baggies had two big sales last summer that will count towards their accounts for the 2025-26 season, with both being Tom Fellows and Torbjorn Heggem.

The pair left for a rough estimated fee of around £20m, with Fellows going down as total pure profit for the Baggies.

Regardless of what happens this season, an increase in broadcasting will only add to Albion’s income, as Baggies fans have been able to watch their side on television more times than usual this campaign.

However, given the feeling of concern in the Championship, that may been owner’s are actually braced for things to get worse, but West Brom’s smart dealings can get them out of trouble.
