Eseosa Sule’s West Brom league debut analysed after fine Under-21 form rewarded

Eseosa Sule was rewarded with his West Bromwich Albion league debut in their 0-0 draw with Millwall on Friday.

The 19-year-old had been banging in goals for the Under-21s, with six in his last three matches for Leigh Downing’s side.

He came on in the 84th minute at The Hawthorns, replacing Daryl Dike for the final six minutes of the contest.

There was a clamour for him to make his debut in the Championship, after Dike, Josh Maja and Aune Heggebo’s recent performances, which have left much to be desired.

West Brom have high hopes for Sule, but there is a long way to go until he should be considered as a first-team regular.

How did Sule perform in West Brom’s draw with Millwall?

Sule showed that he is not ready for senior minutes on a regular basis in West Brom’s draw with the playoff contenders.

In his cameo, he had four total touches of the ball, and gave it away three times, showing that he was not comfortable in possession.

The former Celtic prospect had two carries, for a total distance of 20m, which was a more encouraging aspect to his performance.

He completed the only pass that he attempted and created a total of 0.11 expected assists, per Sofascore.

Perhaps it is too soon to judge him, especially given the short length of time that he was on the pitch, but the Baggies can’t afford to take risks with their second-tier status still under question marks.

What should the plan be for Sule going forward?

James Morrison must continue to use Sule sparingly, as he can’t allow him to play often, if he gives possession away so cheaply.

It is all well and good doing it a few times, in the final few minutes of a game, but if that was a 45-minute spell, it would be a major concern.

He should hand the youngster some minutes before the end of the campaign, especially with Dike and Maja both likely to leave when the season concludes, to make sure that he is ready to be backup.

However, right now, it is too soon, to throw him into the deep end in a relegation battle and put all that pressure on him.
