West Bromwich Albion could be set to receive a points deduction, with a PSR charge confirmed for alleged breaches in the 2024-25 season.

The Albion have had to be creative when it comes to their finances in recent years, following the departure of Guochuan Lai in 2024.

On 13 April, John Percy reported that a points deduction is very possible – something that West Brom are hoping to delay until the 2026-27 campaign.

This season, the Black Country club find themselves in a battle at the wrong end of the Championship, after dismal spells under Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay.

They have turned a corner under former midfielder James Morrison, though a potential points deduction could mean that recent results may not be enough to secure a future in the second tier.

West Brom have picked up points – but it may not be enough

Since falling to a 2-1 defeat against Oxford in his first match at the helm, Morrison has done a superb job of galvanising a downtrodden squad at The Hawthorns.

Following on from that defeat in Oxford, the Baggies have embarked on a fantastic seven-match unbeaten run, seeing them forge a gap to the drop zone.

During this run, Morrison’s side have performed admirably to pick up points against some of the league’s best sides, but draws may not be enough.

Southampton, Hull, Wrexham and Millwall all find themselves in and amongst the race for promotion, while Sheffield United and Bristol City have had their own promotion ambitions at certain points.

While of course, three points would always be the aim, the Baggies have remained consistent in the fact that they have been adding valuable points to their tally – points that now may not matter all too much in the relegation battle.

Dropped points could cost West Brom ahead of season’s end

Under English Football League guidelines, any sporting sanction from the previous season must be applied in the following campaign, which, for Albion, would be this current one.

Relegation rivals Leicester have already been hit with a six-point deduction this term for their own financial misconduct during their most recent EFL stay, aiding West Brom in the battle at the bottom.

Now, that could well be undone, given the precarious positioning in the table for the Black Country club.

Following the most recent draw with Millwall, Oxford were able to close the gap with a win against Watford on Saturday, and now sit just two points behind Morrison’s men.

While the Baggies are unbeaten in seven, the biggest gap formed sat at five points, before it was immediately sliced the next day again.

Particularly against the promotion chasers, draws seemed like fantastic results at the time.

But now, it could come to cost West Brom, with it all-but certain that a points deduction would drop them back into the bottom three.
