West Brom PSR charge: Three players who could quit The Hawthorns with Championship relegation

West Bromwich Albion may have to say goodbye to some of their top stars if they get relegated from the Championship, after being charged with an alleged breach of PSR.

Just when West Brom seemed to be inching towards safety under James Morrison, John Percy shared that they have allegedly fallen afoul of the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules for the 2024-25 season.

West Brom currently sit 20th in the table, just two points above the bottom three. The Baggies haven’t been in League One since 1991, but fear is now rising.

But just as Leicester City were hit with a points deduction for financial breaches, West Brom fans fear they could also be docked points.

If The Hawthorns outfit does get relegated, West Brom’s prized assets are likely to leave.

Now, West Brom News has assessed three players who are unlikely to stick around in League One, should the worst-case scenario happen.

Three West Brom heavy hitters likely to leave

Morrison has done a superb job since succeeding Eric Ramsay in the West Brom dugout, with the Baggies currently on a seven-match unbeaten streak.

But if they did go down, not even his powers of persuasion are likely to keep a host of West Brom players at the club.

That could be a reality after Percy reported that West Brom have allegedly breached financial rules, but Shilen Patel’s team are attempting to delay any punishment until the 2026-27 season.

The report adds that under EFL guidelines, any sporting sanction from the previous season must be applied in the following campaign. That would represent a huge blow to West Brom’s survival hopes with four games to go.

So, which players could leave if relegation were confirmed? According to Sofascore, Nathaniel Phillips is West Brom’s top-performing player this season with a rating of 7.05.

After being on Liverpool’s books for many years, alongside having a host of loan spells, he has found his level in the Championship. There is likely to be a lot of interest in the 29-year-old, and the same could be said for central midfielder Isaac Price.

According to Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old, whose contract runs until 2029, is West Brom’s most valuable player at £8.7million. He has a lot of potential, and after playing at Standard Liege until last summer, Price may have bigger aspirations than League One.

Finally, while there may be many candidates to depart, West Brom’s top scorer, Aune Heggebo, who joined last summer, could be off to pastures new, too.

The 24-year-old has nine goals to his name, with Price in second on eight. Both may be difficult to keep hold of in the English third tier.

Leicester precedent helps West Brom?

News of West Brom’s financial breach has added an extra layer of chaos to the Championship relegation battle.

A deduction, like the six-point one Leicester got earlier this year, would plunge West Brom into the bottom three, leaving them four points adrift of Oxford United.

However, the fact that Leicester only got their deduction in February, after being charged by the Premier League in May for a PSR breach in the three years up to 2023-24, may stand West Brom in good stead.

The Baggies’ alleged financial breach is likely to be much smaller than Leicester’s, as West Brom try and kick the can down the road until next season.

It’s added that they have 14 days to respond from the date of the charge, which is likely to have stemmed from the financial mismanagement that took place under former owner Guochuan Lai.

Either way, a nervy final month of the season is ahead.
