West Brom need to make Svante Ingelsson decision as Sheffield Wednesday brace for sale

West Bromwich Albion‘s move for Svante Ingelsson this winter didn’t materialise, but Shilen Patel may be tempted by Sheffield Wednesday’s current issues.

The Baggies were after a new attack-minded midfielder in the January window, and were said to be ready to sign Ingelsson on a permanent deal.

Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation to League One was announced weeks ago, but the club is still facing off-field financial issues.

Though Albion have their own PSR issues to battle, Patel will be keen on making shrewd business this summer with the money that he can spend.

West Brom could land Ingelsson for cheap, in a deal that Sheffield Wednesday may not be able to turn down.

How much were West Brom willing to spend on Ingelsson?

West Brom were ready to spend £500,000 on Ingelsson this winter, but Sheffield Wednesday knocked back bids from both Millwall and Portsmouth.

The Baggies may not have formally submitted their bid, as it was known that the Swede did not want to leave Hillsborough halfway through the season for personal reasons.

Ingelsson’s in the Championship this season

Ingelsson is expected to pick up all of Wednesday’s awards for being their standout player this season, despite the Owls only having won once in the Championship, and still on a minus three points tally.

Now, the Baggies will have to decide whether or not they want to rekindle their interest in Ingelsson, who is expected to have attention from multiple Championship clubs this summer.

As reported by Alex Miller this Friday, it’s not known what the player’s preference is, but Patel could get ahead of the game by offering him a chance to sign before other clubs.

What is Ingelsson’s contract?

Ingelsson’s contract with Wednesday runs out this summer, but the club hold an option to extend his contract by another year.

That means if he were to leave this summer, any deal would see a transfer fee head the way of the Owls.

Sheffield United and Stoke City are two clubs who have been named as suitors for the 27-year-old, while Albion’s previous interest has been confirmed.

It’s not known if West Brom retain interest in the midfielder, but it would be a smart move to make, considering their own financial issues.

There will also be uncertainty over the likes of Alex Mowatt and other midfielders this summer, which gives Patel clear reasons to make this happen.
