West Brom’s EFL tensions continue vs Ipswich Town as penalty pattern raises concerns

West Bromwich Albion supporters may have another issue with the EFL if things don’t go their way against Ipswich Town this Saturday.

The Baggies host the Tractor Boys at The Hawthorns this weekend in an all-important Championship clash for both sides.

Ipswich are chasing an automatic promotion spot, while Albion know that every result matters in their bid to survive relegation, amid an ongoing issue with the EFL over a PSR breach, which could result in a points deduction.

In recent weeks, Ipswich have been given decisions that have sparked controversy across social media from fans of different teams, with their league-leading penalty record sticking out like a sore thumb.

West Brom fans already don’t like the EFL, and it would be no surprise to see tensions rise further, especially if the Baggies feel hard done by this Saturday.

Ipswich penalty decisions in detail ahead of West Brom

West Brom are set for a hearing with the EFL at the end of April to find out their fate and how many points will be deducted, should they be found guilty of their alleged breach.

Ipswich have their own battle to fight, and penalty decisions seem to have gone their way in recent weeks, but have they been justified?

As seen in the table above, the Tractor Boys have been given almost double the amount of penalties as the team below them with the next highest total of spot kicks.

They have converted 90 per cent of them, but decisions in their last two games specifically have sparked outrage online among Championship fans.

A top-of-the-table clash against Middlesbrough took place at Portman Road last Sunday, where the hosts were given a controversial penalty in the 87th minute to keep them above Boro in a 2-2 draw.

Then, Kieran McKenna’s side were awarded another spot kick this week in their 2-1 away victory to Charlton, for another call that raised eyebrows.

In contrast, Albion have been given just the one penalty this season, but you could also balance this out with the fact that Ipswich averages a 4.9 per cent total average of possession that the Baggies, which helps create chances to win penalties.

Ipswich haven’t only had penalty controversy

At the end of the day, the Baggies need to do their own job, but it won’t fill them with confidence knowing how often Ipswich draw penalties.

Sometimes sides just get the rub of the green, and that might be the case with the Tractor Boys, who also had a controversial goal ruled out against them when they beat Birmingham City 2-1 earlier this month.

The Birmingham City player was deemed to have dribbled the ball out of play before cutting it back for his team-mate to smash home, and on replay, it looks as though it should have been given.

This would have then most likely led Birmingham to have gotten a point.

West Brom, however, are unbeaten in nine and will be looking forward to welcoming Ipswich to The Hawthorns for a big game.
