West Brom: End-of-season stats show where James Morrison’s full focus will be this summer

West Bromwich Albion have some interesting statistics to come out of their Championship season, some of which James Morrison will need to pay close attention to.

The Baggies had a turbulent campaign to say the least, going from play-off hopefuls at the start of the season all the way down to relegation battlers.

In the middle of that, Shilen Patel had a PSR breach to deal with, as Albion were docked two points right at the end of the season.

Morrison’s successful period as interim boss led him to land the permanent West Brom head coach role, with plans in place for a successful summer.

However, some of West Brom’s Championship stats will be important for Morrison to dissect during this period, especially if there is a vision to move forward and improve.

West Brom had Championship survival wrapped up before the final day, where Morrison had just landed the permanent role.

The Baggies boss then ironically lost his first game in charge after being appointed on a permanent basis, handing Sheffield Wednesday their first home win of the season on the final day.

WBA’s Championship stats, as per FotMob

As per FotMob, West Brom have some very interesting stats for the season. Some of the areas where Albion find their most success are in defending, as a total of 14 clean sheets is the fifth highest in the league.

That’s more than the second-best defence in the league in Middlesbrough, who have 13 clean sheets. The Black Country Club also excel with set-piece goals, as a tally of 19th also has them the fifth highest ranking in this department.

However, the lack of goalscoring across the campaign was seen with a low 1.00 scored per match, which was the fifth worst in the entire division, with only 93 big chances created.

From these stats, it looks like West Brom have a good defensive basis, but have clear issues in the final third which need to be addressed this summer.

James Morrison’s 4-4-2 will not work next season

The traditional 4-4-2 is what Morrison leaned on to get the Baggies out of the relegation zone, but it is the most stripped-back, back-to-basics formation that there is.

It’s often only used by managers for a short-term quick fix, and though it worked for the Albion boss, it will not be the foundation to build on for the next campaign.

The 4-4-2 was the best choice for Morrison to use at the time; it brought balance to the squad and was the perfect basis for a team that had motivation and desire as their biggest threat.

James Morrison’s West Brom record:

Momentum will be gone this summer, and it’ll be back to square one, but Morrison will most likely use this time to implement a new philosophy.

Attacking fluidity is needed, and though the impending transfer business should help this, it’s up to the West Brom boss to fix it.
