West Brom to scour through CCTV footage as Southampton ‘spygate’ takes fresh turn

West Bromwich Albion will surely be among a host of clubs scouring through CCTV footage following the Southampton spy allegations.

The Championship playoff picture began to look a whole lot different on Friday, with the Saints accused of filming a training session by playoff semi-final opponents Middlesbrough.

Southampton are not expected to contest the charge, despite the potentially serious nature of it and the fact there are clear rules in place.

Tonda Eckert replaced Will Still after a poor start to the season, though the Saints have since massively turned a corner – resulting in a 19-match unbeaten run to secure a spot in the playoffs.

Now, West Brom will surely be among the clubs with growing suspicions.

Championship clubs to check CCTV footage following Southampton allegation

The Saints have been in fine form across recent months, securing a spot in the playoffs.

Alongside this, they also came close to beating Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final, having beaten Arsenal to get there.

Now, a report from talkSPORT outlines that a number of Championship clubs are looking back at CCTV footage to see if they themselves may have been a victim of the scandal.

No side is mentioned specifically, though there stands a chance that the Baggies could be among this group, having picked up just one point against the South Coast outfit this term.

Back in December, Eckert’s side would overcome West Brom 3-2 on home soil, before they netted a last minute equaliser at The Hawthorns in March.

West Brom will be frustrated after previous EFL run-in

With the entire division in uproar over the issue, some clubs will have more to say than others.

Last month, the West Brom themselves had a run-in with the EFL, with a two-point deduction handed out as a result of a PSR breach.

With how quick the process was, Albion will be one of the clubs looking to see Southampton severely punished, after a fairly small breach resulted in a deduction that could have seen West Brom relegated had they not found form under James Morrison.

Had Morrison been in charge for the whole season, West Brom would have earned 69 points based on their points per game.

The breach is one thing, but the speed in which a decision was made raised eyebrows in the Black Country.

Naturally, the timing could not be worse for the EFL given that the playoffs have started.

But the Baggies and others will be pushing for a swift resolution before the summer months.
