How long is McNeil’s contract extension?

McNeil is one of the most touted youngsters at West Brom, and they will be glad that he has committed his future to the club.

He has signed a two-year contract that will keep him in the West Midlands until 2028, at the very earliest.

That should mean that Albion are safe from clubs trying to poach him, for the foreseeable future, anyway.

Selling their best talents has been a way for the Baggies to decrease their Profit and Sustainability worries in the past, but hopefully McNeil is one that sticks around.

Who is West Brom talent McNeil?

Born in Dudley, at the age of six, he was invited to an eight-week trial with local rivals Aston Villa, but ultimately ended up in the Baggies’ academy instead.

He made his first appearances for the Under-18s at the age of 16 and made a brilliant impression in his time in the older age groups, scoring once and assisting twice in a total of 18 matches in the Under-18s.

That earned him a spot in the Under-21s, where he has notched three goals and three assists in 11 games.

He was particularly impressive on his debut at that level, bagging two assists against Liverpool before he scored a brace in a 4-2 win against Derby County’s youngsters.

What have West Brom figures said?

Academy Manager Richard Stevens spoke to the club’s official website about the contract extension, and he believes that it is fully justified.

He said: “When you look at Remar’s season, it’s only right to reward that level of quality with this contract.

“He’s been in the Academy from a very early age and has been a really eye-catching player during my time at the club.

“He’s had some hurdles and some really good challenges along the way, but he’s overcome them during his academy journey and that’s allowed him to grasp these opportunities in the under-21s.

“It showed, too, as he stayed in the team and didn’t come out of it. That’s testimony to the effort he’s put in because he’s a very humble lad and has always supported the boys – even when out injured, Remar was always there, home and away, backing the rest of his team-mates.

“We set out to offer these lads early professional contracts and early exposure to those higher age groups. In finding those experiences, the lads have shown a togetherness, spirit, and a culture to go and get some really impressive wins with their age groups.

“He has the chance to grow a really nice career at Albion and I only see Remar flourishing in this environment and getting better with time.”

That shows extreme confidence in McNeil’s ability, and hopefully he can be the next one to step up to the first-team from the academy.
