West Brom: Chris Mepham may force James Morrison into rethink after subtle exit hint

West Bromwich Albion defender Chris Mepham faces an uncertain future, but he may get the chance to put himself in the shop window next month.

Mepham did not feature for the Baggies across the final three months of the 2025-26 Championship campaign.

The 28-year-old was not injured towards the end of the season, but instead intentionally left out by James Morrison.

Morrison’s confirmation ahead of the final-day loss to Sheffield Wednesday that Mepham was being overlooked for a place on the bench was a subtle hint he could be done at The Hawthorns.

But the centre-back now has a chance to change that prior to the transfer window opening amid an announcement away from West Brom.

Chris Mepham called up to Wales squad

West Brom have already announced the exits of some players following the conclusion of the campaign, with others set to follow.

Mepham could be one of those who seeks pastures new, particularly if he cannot even make it into Albion’s matchday squad.

Chris Mepham’s career stats

Despite his lack of minutes this year, Mepham has still been included in Wales’ training squad ahead of their upcoming fixtures.

Wales take on Ghana and Romania in friendlies next month in Cardiff and Bucharest respectively, having failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Mepham is part of a 29-man group for the five-day camp and will be hopeful of being included in the final squad for those fixtures.

Craig Bellamy is expected to heavily rotate his side, with players still involved in Premier League action more in need of a breather.

And should Mepham get some minutes for Wales, even in a friendly, it will give him an opportunity to showcase what he is capable of.

Mepham one of three West Brom players in Wales training squad

The Baggies have had their fair share of Wales players in the squad down the years – and not least right now.

Mepham is one of three Albion players in Cymru’s training group, along with Ollie Bostock and Alex Williams.

Bostock and Williams both had a taste of first-team action last season and will likely play bigger parts for West Brom in 2026-27.

As for Mepham, whose West Brom deal expires in 2028, well time will tell on that front.

Morrison’s stance appears to have been made clear, so now it is over to the defender.
