Ollie Bostock wins international call-up after James Morrison challenge

Ollie Bostock has received his first senior call-up for Wales after being named West Bromwich Albion’s Young Player of the Year.

An academy graduate at The Hawthorns, the 19-year-old made his debut in the 3-0 defeat to Millwall back in October.

Racking up seven Championship appearances across the season, the youngster netted his first goal in February – scoring in James Morrison’s first game in charge – a 2-1 defeat against Oxford United.

Capable of playing on either flank, the Baggies boss has high hopes for Bostock, having worked with him before the pair stepped up to their current first-team roles.

Now he has been rewarded by Wales boss Craig Bellamy, having been selected for friendly matches against Ghana and Romania.

Craig Bellamy selects two West Brom men to represent Wales

Back in March, the summer plans would be confirmed for Wales.

Losing out to Bosnia on penalties, Bellamy’s side would miss out on the World Cup, alongside Isaac Price’s Northern Ireland.

As a result, the chance is there to take a look at the likes of Bostock this summer, with friendlies against Ghana and Romania.

Alongside Swansea defender Cameron Congreve – who replaces Ben Cabango – Bostock would receive his call-up to replace Harry Wilson ahead of the friendlies in Cardiff and Bucharest.

Earlier this year, the West Brom youngster would make two appearances on the way to securing U21 European Championship qualification, racking up 60 minutes across clashes with Belarus and Denmark.

Now, he may get the chance to impress at senior level, after Baggies gaffer Morrison piled the praise on his shoulders earlier this week.

What has James Morrison said about Ollie Bostock?

Morrison worked with Bostock in the youth ranks in the Black Country, and further placed his trust in him as his side soared to safety.

Speaking to Express & Star, the former midfielder said: “He’s had big growth.

“He’s been with us from the start of pre-season, he had to learn the position and learn what is expected being in the first-team environment. He got his chance and did really well,” added Morrison.

Playing a bit-part role, Bostock was far from the first name on the teamsheet, though his manager remained full of praise for his attitude.

“He’s had to deal with the disappointment of not playing,” he said. “That’s what it is as a young player. You go up and you do down. It’s how you come through that.

“On the training pitch he works every day really hard. He’s got to go away and keep progressing in the off-season and come back in the right frame of mind to try to have that breakthrough season,” he concluded.

With a chance to impress at senior international level, the young winger’s confidence could be sky-high heading into pre-season, where Bostock will be looking to stake a legitimate claim for a place in Morrison’s side next term.
