Chris Mepham slammed over 'naive' moment in Wales defeat vs Denmark

West Bromwich Albion defender Chris Mepham came in for criticism whilst playing for Wales on Sunday.

The 28-year-old started and played the full 90 minutes in Wales' 2-0 defeat to Denmark.

Craig Bellamy's side were unable to respond after narrowly falling to defeat against Portugal on Thursday.

Mepham has started just two Championship games for West Brom this season, and is still trying to carve out a role under James Morrison.

As such, a strong international break could offer him the opportunity to return to The Hawthorns in a good position to win a starting role.

However, one moment in particular in Cymru's defeat to Denmark didn't see the Albion defender cover himself in glory.

Wales reached half-time with the scores goalless in Copenhagen, and were heading towards a good away point in the Nations League.

However, a Ben Davies own goal just seven minutes into the second half gave Denmark the lead, before Gustav Isaksen added the second on 66 minutes.

Mepham started in central defence alongside Davies, and it wasn't long before he was involved in a moment that drew frustration.

With 15 minutes on the clock, the Baggies defender fouled Rasmus Hojlund out wide when the Napoli striker wasn't particularly going anywhere.

Speaking via BBC 2 Wales, former Wales Women's international Nia Jones couldn't make sense of Mepham's decision to foul the Danish striker.

"That's naive. It's really naive. Hojlund isn't going anywhere there so there's no reason to jump in," Jones said.

So, this ill-advised foul aside, did Mepham's overall performance make up for it or was this moment a reflection of his all-round display?

Staying consistent from one performance to the next has been an issue for Mepham during his time with West Brom.

He's shown the ability to be a very good defender at Championship level with Sunderland, Bournemouth and Brentford in the past.

But all too often have his Baggies performances been left incomplete, and that was the case in Wales' defeat to Denmark.

Per FotMob, Mepham completed 94 per cent of his passes, played four passes into the final third and was accurate with five long ball attempts.

He also made six clearances, two interceptions, three blocks and made 13 total defensive contributions.

On the flip side, Mepham was dispossessed once, made only two tackles, won two of his five ground duels and none of his two aerial duels.

Mepham also gave away two fouls in the game as well as picking up a yellow card.

As such, his place in Wales' starting lineup is likely to be in doubt when Bellamy's side take on Norway on Thursday evening.
