How ex-Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray reacted to West Brom fans singing The Liquidator at The Hawthorns

Matt Murray was the target of The Liquidator when he was covering West Brom's 1-0 win over Watford on Saturday.

The famous tune is currently banned by the Molineux club over concerns over offensive chanting.

Wolves launched a review in August, and decided that it would not return to the pre-match entertainment, despite fans wanting it back.

The Baggies still use the anthem, and aim a taunt at their Black Country rivals when they sing it.

While the song played out pre-match at The Hawthorns, Murray who retired from playing in 2010, was in attendance.

The ex-Wolves goalkeeper's reaction was captured by supporters, who went away happy after Jimmy-Jay Morgan's strike was the difference.

The Baggies fans sang along to the iconic terrace anthem, with their usual message of "**** off Wanderers, West Brom"/

It was particularly relevant as former Old Gold star Murray was in the broadcast gantry in the West Stand.

The 45-year-old took it light-heartedly, laughing and shaking his head as some directed the chant towards him.

He later took to X, replying to a fan who claimed that he was signing the Wolves version in his head.

Murray said: "Exactly that!!! It was good fun though and I hope we come out on top in a weeks time at the Molineux."

It is good to see the recognition that it all just a bit of banter, and it not being taken too seriously.

When do West Brom and Wolves play each other?

Murray will be hoping that his former side can come out on top when the sides renew their rivalry in the Championship this season.

He will not have to wait too long, as they are set to face off at Molineux on 20 September.

The reverse fixture in West Bromwich, will be held on 20 February, so could play a key role in either side's ambitions.

The last seven fixtures between the sides have resulted in three Albion wins, two draws, and two Wolves wins.

The Wolverhampton-based outfit won the last meeting between the teams, a 2-0 win in the FA Cup fourth round in January 2024.

However, the Throstles will hark back to their 5-1 victory in the Premier League in February 2012.

Peter Odemwingie scored a hat-trick, Jonas Olsson and Keith Andrews scored as Roy Hodgson's side dismantled their arch-rivals.

That result led to Mick McCarthy being sacked after the thrashing, as Wovles dropped into the relegation zone.
