James Morrison's 'daydreaming' comment on Jimmy-Jay Morgan tells West Brom fans one thing

Jimmy-Jay Morgan enjoyed a fine debut for West Bromwich Albion against Rotherham United on Saturday.

The summer signing netted twice on his competitive debut as the Baggies saw off the Millers 4-1 in the EFL Cup first round.

Morgan cushioned home Harry Whitwell's mishit shot in the eighth minute, then headed home his brace after the hour.

The 20-year-old was taken off on a hat-trick, though, with James Morrison clearly deciding it was in his interest to protect the forward.

Morgan's double was a great introduction to the Albion faithful who made the trip to the New York Stadium.

But one interesting comment from Morrison after the game proves one thing to West Brom supporters about the upcoming season.

Aged only 20, Morgan - who signed this summer from Chelsea - is still very much a work in progress.

He was signed full in the knowledge there may some teething pains at some point this term.

Baggies boss Morrison said the big challenge he faces with Morgan is keeping him on his toes, as he has the habit at times of "daydreaming".

In quotes reported by the Express & Star, Morrison said: "I am really pleased but I still need to be on him. There are times when he is daydreaming.

“He needs to be in the game all the time. But we can see his qualities and he is only going to get better.

“When I did my homework on him before we signed him, that is what people told me. I need to keep him.

“I will give him the love when he does good. When he does something wrong, I’ll tell him that too.”

It was another refreshing take from Morrison, and it tells us a lot about what he will demand this season.

Morrison was absolutely delighted for his young forward to get off the mark, as were all Albion supporters.

But his messaging after the game was really clever.

The modern-day Baggies legend will demand the highest standards as he attempts to get his side challenging at the right end of the table.

Giving his young forward a pat of the back, while also keeping him ground, is a really clever bit of man-management.

The hope is, of course, that Morgan can take this form forward in the Championship now.

Morrison, though, has proven to the Baggies fans that will be doing his level best to keep Morgan, and the rest of his squad, on their toes.
