Tony Mowbray issues big update amid West Brom new manager saga
Tony Mowbray is hopeful of getting back into management within "the next six months" after being discussed as an option for West Brom.
Speaking to former Middlesbrough team-mate Bernie Slaven (13 January), Mowbray said that ahead of scans a year on from bowel cancer surgery, he'll be "back on the market" if he gets the all-clear.
The 61-year-old took leave from Birmingham City last February before resigning in May as he continued his battle, but as he prepares for a return to work, reports of a return to The Hawthorns have surfaced.
Mowbray said: "Here I am today, a year on. I feel strong, I feel ready, I feel full of energy again – but let's wait and see.
"In three-and-a-half days' time I've got some scans – so hopefully they'll be all clear and I'll be on with the next six months, and see if I can get back to work.
“If they’re all clear, I’m open on the market again really, to go back to work, [to] see what jobs are out there and see what’s happening.”
Tony Mowbray could be tempted by West Brom return
With Mowbray on the cusp of resuming his illustrious managerial career, and the Baggies still without a manager after Carlos Corberan's exit, reuniting the two after 16 years could be a match made in heaven.
Other than being promoted from League One as runners-up with Blackburn in 2018, Mowbray's 2007-08 Championship title victory at The Hawthorns is the only silverware Mowbray has won in the dugout.
Albion have eyes on the top end of the second tier once again this season after reaching the play-offs under Corberan, and you'd struggle to find a fan who wouldn't welcome Mowbray back with open arms.
The Baggies' pursuit of younger managers is yet to come to fruition since Corberan's departure to Valencia, after talks with Raphael Wicky fell apart on Monday due to a dispute over his backroom staff.
It remains to be seen if Shilen Patel has identified Mowbray as a possible option, but if Albion are the club he makes his return to management at, expect the promotion push to continue amid a wave of nostalgia.
