West Bromwich Albion's George Campbell kept a clean sheet for the US Men's National Team against Canada on Wednesday.

The centre-back was given the call-up by former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch ahead of the break, and has now started twice in four games.

The 25-year-old started in a 4-1 win against Peru at the beginning of the international break, but a mistake saw him dropped to the bench for two games.

James Morrison was perhaps somewhat happy with this, as the Albion boss won't be seeking validation for his trusted defender.

However, the player himself will have been keen to bounce back in a bragging rights contest against Canada.

Campbell has seen a mixed reaction after the 1-0 win, which makes for interesting reading from a West Brom perspective.

How US media reacted to George Campbell's display vs Canada

Campbell is arguably the first name on the teamsheet for West Brom, and has started in seven of the Baggies' first eight Championship games.

The Black Country Club will have been hoping for the central defender to have a positive international break, while also returning to The Hawthorns in good health.

Campbell had a 78 per cent passing accuracy in the friendly against Canada, with a 50 per cent long-ball accuracy.

He only had to make a total of five defensive contributions, but some of them were clearly valued.

Sports Illustrated referenced Campbell's 6.8 FotMob rating and wrote: "Had a big clearance from the penalty box in the 23rd minute after a moment of carelessness from partner [Chris] Richards. Almost had an own goal in the 67th minute."

ESPN handed the West Brom skipper an 8/10 rating, writing: "Campbell had two of the most significant defensive interventions in the match that seemed destined for a Canada goal.

"The 25-year-old moved up in the depth chart after this performance."

Finally, USA Today handed him a 7/10 rating, explaining where he can improve his game: "Defensively, he is quite competent. Where things become a bit more questionable is when the ball is at his feet.

"If he can improve in that area, perhaps he makes a strong claim for the full-time job beside Richards."

But why is Campbell not guaranteed a starting spot away from West Brom?

Who is Campbell' competition to start for the USA?

The USA are clearly improving their national team, as the Baggies have watched several American players come to the Championship in recent years.

West Brom have their own American in Campbell, while other stars in the division include Derby County's Patrick Agyeman and Stoke City's Jack McGlynn, and Middlesbrough have four on their books: Aidan Morris, Sebastian Berhalter, Max Arfsten and Rokas Pukstas.

Crystal Palace's Richards is clearly the number one centre-back option, but who else is Campbell in competition with to start games?

The US also have Celtic's Auston Trusty, Villarreal's Alex Freeman and several other MLS central defenders.

So long as Campbell keeps performing for club and country, he won't have an issue with nailing down his spot for the US Men's National Team.
