Wolves fan's mocking post about West Brom backfires spectacularly

The shouting match has begun between West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters.

It's the biggest week on both West Brom's and Wolves' calendar: Black Country Derby week.

Sunday will see James Morrison take his side to Molineux for one of the most hotly anticipated fixtures in the Championship this season.

Nobody on either side of the divide will forget the scenes at The Hawthorns when these two last clashed in January 2024.

Against that as the most recent backdrop to this fixture, tensions between both sets of fans will again be at fever pitch come 12pm on Sunday.

However, in the middle of all the back and forth between rival supporters, one Wolves fan has made a strange attempt at a brag.

How did Wolves fan try to mock West Brom?

One of the best aspects of a football rivalry, and the sport in general, is the banter shared between opposition supporters.

Some, however, clearly do it better than others, as proven by one Wolves fan in particular this week.

Posting to X on Tuesday evening, a user by the name of OGP (@oldgoldpack) decided to try and poke fun at West Brom.

"While the Wolves were in Braga, drinking the lager… The Albion were rotting in the championship where they’ve been for years. BONG," they wrote.

Let's take a look at this, attempt, at poking fun at West Brom and why it makes absolutely zero sense.

Wolves weren't in Braga first

Starting with the first line: "While the Wolves were in Braga..," that much was true, but not before West Brom.

Indeed, Albion beat the Portuguese side 2-0 in October 1978 in the UEFA Cup, before again beating them in the second leg 1-0 two weeks later.

Wolves failed to beat Braga in both of their two-legged ties against them in the 2019-20 Europa League group stage, losing the first leg and drawing the second.

Secondly, that 2019-20 season when Wolves were playing Braga, Albion certainly weren't "rotting in the Championship".

That was the season the Baggies won automatic promotion to the Premier League under Slaven Bilic.

Finally, there is of course now an inescapable irony that not only are Wolves back in the Championship, but they're currently below Albion in the table.

Perhaps this Wolves supporter should've done a bit more thinking and research before trying to take a swipe at West Brom.
