Ex-West Brom manager is major contender to take charge at Burnley after sack news
Another managerial head has rolled in the Championship, and this time it's Nicky Hayen's at Burnley.
It took Preston North End just seven games this season to swing the axe on Paul Heckingbottom on 13 September.
The Lilywhites haven't picked up since then, but did take a point from their clash with West Brom on Saturday.
Aune Heggebo salvaged a draw for the Baggies after Andrew Hughes but Preston ahead on 78 minutes.
Saturday also bore witness to one of the big shock results of the 2026-27 Championship season so far as Lincoln City beat Burnley 4-1.
It was a result that leaves the newly-relegated Clarets in the drop zone, and Hayen without a job.
Why next Burnley meeting could be emotional one for West Brom fans
Burnley fans have been calling for Hayen to be sacked for a number of weeks now, after their dismal start to life back in the second tier.
The Turf Moor outfit have won just once from their opening 12 league games, putting a mere eight points on the board.
Their wishes have now been granted, as the Belgian coach didn't survive the night after Burnley's embarrassing defeat at Sincil Bank.
It was confirmed by Burnley on Saturday evening that Hayen has been relieved of his duties, as they begin their search for his replacement.
On Sunday, the bookies have presented a number of early contenders to take the job, one of which being former West Brom boss Carlos Corberan.
Steven Gerrard is the current favourite at 4/1, but Corberan is priced as the second favourite at 5/1.
Dave Challinor, Sean Dyche and Rob Edwards are all priced at 8/1 and make up the other early contenders.
So, what is Corberan's current situation and should he become Burnley boss, when would he possibly get his West Brom reunion?
When do West Brom and Burnley next play?
Corberan may not have achieved promotion to the Premier League with West Brom, but no manager has come closer since.
Reigning from October 2022 to December 2024, Albion finished ninth in 2-2022-23 before coming fifth in 2023-24: his only full season in charge.
As such, the Spaniard remains a largely popular figure amongst Baggies fans, and so it would be bittersweet for many to see him back in a Championship dugout.
Corberan has been out of work since mid-September this year, after being sacked by La Liga side Valencia.
West Brom have already beaten Burnley this season, winning 3-1 at The Hawthorns on matchday two.
The reverse fixture at Turf Moor is scheduled for 2 March next year, which given the situation Burnley are in, is a long time away.
So, if Corberan was to be appointed, it would be unwise to start planning his reunion party just yet, as Clarets chiefs will expect an immediate improvement.
