James Morrison has worked wonders since first taking over as West Brom boss earlier this year, but he also has others to thank.

The Baggies looked to be heading for the Championship drop prior to Morrison overseeing a 10-game unbeaten run.

Despite also being docked points, Albion stayed up and were given a platform to regroup in the summer.

West Brom did suffer a recent dip when earing one point from nine, but back-to-back wins has them firmly back on track.

Promotion to the Premier League is not entirely out of the question, with Albion currently occupying fifth place.

While Morrison deserves most of the praise, there is another figure who also deserves his flowers.

Why Matt Gill has been pivotal to West Brom's success

Matt Gill came in alongside Morrison for the final 11 games of last season to provide an experienced head.

It looked as though Gill would join Russell Martin at Leicester City, having previously worked with him at multiple other clubs.

However, West Brom manager to persuade Gill to stay on at The Hawthorns, with his permanent appointment announced in late June.

In the view of former player turned pundit Adam Virgo, speaking on the Inside the 72 podcast, that appointment was a game-changer.

Quite literally, in fact, as Virgo does not believe West Brom would have had it in them to recover from two goals down and win a game, as they did in the 3-2 win over Blackburn Rovers last week, this time last year.

"To go 2-0 down [and go on to win] shows incredible resilience from them, Virgo said.

"Matt Gill’s a former teammate of mine whose gone in alongside him.

"He's a very, very good coach. You're now seeing that as they build on the basics.

"There’s always moments when you look back and think, 'that's a game we would have lost last season'."

Who else does James Morrison have on West Brom coaching staff?

West Brom also confirmed the appointment of Gavin Strachan at the same time as Gill in the summer.

Strachan arrived from Celtic, where he had spent the previous six years, and he also has experience working as assistant manager for Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough United.

Former Middlesbrough defender Tony McMahon is also on Morrison's coaching staff, as is Boaz Myhill as goalkeeping coach.

Morrison may be the focal point as manager, but West Brom's turnaround in the space of just eight months would not be possible without each of those smaller cogs.
