How West Brom may have cleverly used U21s to get free agent auditions
West Bromwich Albion's U21s hosted a pre-season game against a PFA team full of free agents this Tuesday.
Albion once again flexed their strong youth side with a 3-1 win over the PFA pre-season squad, which consisted of two different sides in each half.
The match took place at the Fitlife Foods Performance Centre, where figures for the Baggies were able to take a look at some of their own talent.
There were multiple top-draw performances from young West Brom talents, as Souleyman Mandey netted twice and Remar McNeil was on the scoresheet, too.
The pair helped their side to a 3-1 win over an experienced and physical side, but one that contained a couple of fairly big EFL names.
Given that James Morrison is still looking to add to his squad, West Brom may have pulled a blinder by setting up the friendly to get an up-close look at some possible free transfers.
The free agents that West Brom may have taken a look at in pre-season friendly
Over 3,000 people tuned into the friendly between West Brom's U21s and the PFA pre-season squad.
It's highly likely that senior figures of other clubs were also interested in watching the match to get a look at some players.
However, Albion and some of their staff had the best view out of anyone, with many watching on from the sidelines.
Though some young Albion stars stole the show, there were also some big names that Baggies fans may be interested in seeing come to The Hawthorns this summer.
Among the players in the first half squad for the PFA was former Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy.
The Egyptian played and scored for the Tractor Boys in the Premier League just two seasons ago, and could be a smart pick-up for Albion if seen as a viable option on a free.
Jamie Paterson has a wealth of Championship experience, having most recently played and scored in the second tier with Coventry City in the 2024-25 season, and could add depth at left-midfield all for the price of nothing.
Former Sheffield Wednesday man Marvin Johnson also had a good outing in the second half.
Though Albion are stacked at left-back, the 35-year-old can also play further up the field, as Shilen Patel may look to utilise the free agent market this summer.
What West Brom learned from their own youngsters vs PFA squad
After the arrival of Nolan Galves, West Brom News understands that Cameron Archer could be Morrison's next target this summer.
However, the Albion boss may have had food for thought on what he currently has if he caught a glimpse of the friendly match this week.
Surprisingly, West Brom's U21s looked very in control against the PFA free agents in both halves.
They coped well with the physicality that many brought to the pitch, and were slick but calm in possession.
Mandey in particular looked very promising, scoring from the spot and drilling home a lovely right-footed finish to seal victory for his side.
He, along with McNeil looked fearless, as did the entire defence up against real quality opposition, as they may be due a first-team call-up later next season.
