Why second West Brom raid on Oxford United makes sense as Brodie Spencer eyed
West Brom could be about to make a second addition at right-back as Oxford United's Brodie Spencer emerges as a target.
Albion confirmed the arrival of Nolan Galves from Rodez on Tuesday morning.
Galves played 36 times last season, assisting eight goals in the process, as Rodez reached the Ligue 2 playoffs.
As covered by West Brom News, Galves has made a piece of history in the process.
He is the first French defender playing for a Ligue 2 side to move directly to a Championship club this century.
And it may well be that Galves is quickly followed by another right-back in Spencer.
What has been reported on Brodie Spencer to West Brom?
West Brom have already signed experienced goalkeeper Matt Ingram from Oxford following the U's relegation into League One.
According to a report from Football League World on Tuesday, Albion could yet return with a bid for Spencer.
At this stage, Albion are said to just hold an interest in the defender, along with fellow Championship side Queens Park Rangers.
This is despite a deal being struck for Galves, with Alfie Gilchrist the only other option available to James Morrison there.
While it may be strange to sign a second right-back in the same window, Albion's limited options there must be factored in.
Plus, Spencer is also capable of playing in a more advanced area as wing-back, or indeed at centre-back.
That versatility explains why he is the next name on West Brom's transfer radar, but it may spell bad news for one.
Alfie Gilchrist exit may be step closer at West Brom
Gilchrist failed to establish himself in his maiden campaign at The Hawthorns.
Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers have been linked with Gilchrist, who is under contract until 2030.
If a second right-back is signed before the window closes, you have to assume that means Gilchrist can move on.
After playing just 663 minutes of league football last time out, the former Chelsea player will no doubt also be eager to find a new club.
For now, this is very much one to keep an eye on with potentially one in and one out.
