Why West Brom confidence is now growing over Toby Collyer return

West Bromwich Albion are hoping to bring Toby Collyer back to The Hawthorns this summer window.

The Manchester United midfielder was brought to B71 on loan last season, but was later called back due to injury issues halting his progress.

Now, as James Morrison gears up for the 2026-2027 season, bringing the Englishman back before the 1 September deadline is on the agenda.

After recovering from that injury last season, Collyer was sent back out on loan, but this time to Hull City, where he spent the second half of the season.

The Tigers also want a reunion with the midfielder and Hull had tried to hijack West Brom's move for Collyer, but it seems another U-turn has emerged

Now, the Baggies look to have all the advantage in the race with their confidence over sealing a transfer shared.

While Collyer would not technically be a new face, as he has played for West Brom before, supporters never really got to see the true qualities he could offer.

Those aforementioned injuries meant he started just once for the Baggies last season, but he could now feature more as a returned is eyed.

On Thursday, 27 August, The Sun reported that advisers close to Collyer have questioned whether a move to a Premier League club is the right step for him amid interest from Hull City.

They feel that he would be better served at going down to the Championship, where he would have better luck at gaining minutes.

Then, on Friday morning, 28 August, The Sun have shared that West Brom are now confident of landing a move for the English midfielder.

So, it is a move that could now gather steam as we move closer to the transfer deadline.

Why James Morrison will be pushing for Collyer move

While West Brom fans may not have got to see much of Collyer last season, Morrison, who was part of the coaching staff would have seen a lot more.

Morrison was part of Ryan Mason's staff in the 2025-2026 season when Collyer was with the Midlands club.

He would have watched how Collyer trained and the attitude he presented, and a return for a player who barely played would not be eyed without his approval
