West Bromwich Albion could yet look to secure the signing of Southampton's Cameron Archer ahead of the deadline.

The striker is expected to leave the Saints before the close of the window, and Albion are a team who have kept tabs on his situation all summer.

The former Sheffield United number nine has fallen down the pecking order at St. Mary's, and faces a hard task of budging Cyle Larin out of Tonda Eckert's side.

With that said, the 24-year-old looks to be open to a fresh start, and James Morrison may want one more forward.

Why West Brom can still sign Cameron Archer before deadline

West Brom can sign Archer for as little as £3million up front, with a further £2m also wanted by Southampton.

With Morrison sticking to a two-striker formation, Jimmy-Jay Morgan, Barney Stewart and Aune Heggebo are his only three natural options, hence the desire for one more centre-forward.

In an update from Darren Witcoop via X on Sunday, it's said that his former club, Preston North End, are leading the chase for him.

However, it's also understood that several Championship clubs are also still in the hunt for the Jamaican internationals signature.

One of them is most likely West Brom after previous reports of interest from credible sources.

Why Archer may snub Preston for West Brom

Archer enjoyed a loan spell with Preston in the 2021-22 season, scoring seven times in 20 games.

However, there is growing frustration at Deepdale, with fans asking Paul Heckingbottom to resign after a poor start to the season.

Archer will most likely see West Brom as the better destination to enjoy his football, as he could form a special partnership with Morgan up top.
