Euro giants join hunt for West Brom first-team star – Ornstein

Some ominous news from David Ornstein of the Athletic on Monday.

The former BBC man has claimed that Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Marseille are all in the hunt for breakthrough star Nathan Ferguson.

The 19-year-old helped keep a clean sheet against Middlesbrough on Saturday and he’s now played 11 of the club’s 12 Championship games this season.

The Sun previously reported that both Tottenham and Crystal Palace were after the up-and-coming star, who offers versatility at either full-back position or in the centre.

West Brom are in talks with Ferguson over a new five-year deal but Ornstein claims that the two sides are still a way apart from agreeing terms.

Time isn’t on West Brom’s side either, with Ferguson’s current contract running out in the summer.

If he did leave at the end of the summer a move abroad could see West Brom miss out on a chunk of money. British clubs would have to agree compensation, while non-British clubs would have to pay £420,000, according to Ornstein.

The only upside is that Ornstein has said Ferguson is keen on playing regularly, which could mean he rules out any of the big clubs after him. It does seem that West Brom have got a job on their hands to commit him to stay at The Hawthorns, though.
