Wrexham ready to swoop as defender rejects late move to West Brom
West Brom have failed in a late attempt to sign defender Festy Ebosele from Turkish side, Istanbul Basaksehir.
The Baggies are still searching for recruits heading into the final hours of the winter transfer market, as Eric Ramsay is keen to further bolster his squad in a fight for Championship survival.
Albion have already made multiple signings this window, with Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba returning to The Hawthorns once again on loan from Aston Villa on deadline day.
Though the attacker was Ramsay’s third signing of the window, it’s clear that West Brom want to add more quality to their backline after their attempts for Ebosele.
Wrexham to beat West Brom in signing Festy Ebosele
West Brom have already signed Danny Imray on loan from Crystal Palace, which may raise eyebrows in the Baggies’ pursuit of Ebosele.
The right-back has only played 13 league matches this season for Istanbul Basaksehir, and may be hoping for a return to England with the clock ticking down.
Ebosele has previously played in the Championship with both Derby County and Watford, and suggestions are pointing toward his return to England’s second division.
- Ebosele has scored in the UEFA Conference League this campaign
- He played 38 times for Derby in the Championship across two seasons
According to journalist Darren Witcoop on X this Monday, Ebosele turned down a move to The Hawthorns, with Wrexham now pushing to seal a last-gasp deal.
It’s not yet clear if the transfer approach is on a permanent basis or not, but either way, it’s another kick in the teeth for the Baggies.
What does the Ebosele interest say for Danny Imray’s future already?
Ebosele can play in multiple positions, but excels in an advanced right-back role, much like Imray.
His signing would have been exciting for Baggies fans, but does it mean that Ramsay has already seen enough of Imray?
Imray’s stats vs Portsmouth:
- Minutes: 45
- Pass accuracy: 42%
- Cross accuracy: 0%
- Ground duels won: 50%
It’s fair to say that Imray didn’t cover himself in glory after being hooked at halftime on his debut in the damaging 3-0 defeat to Portsmouth this past weekend. But surely Ramsay can’t be giving up on him after one game?
Time will tell, but if the interest in Ebosele is anything to go by, it suggests that Albion aren’t done shopping to improve the right-hand side of their team.
