Josh Griffiths’ West Brom contract examined after Blackburn axe

Josh Griffiths was dropped in West Bromwich Albion‘s 0-0 draw with Blackburn Rovers on Easter Monday.

The 24-year-old started the 2-2 draw with Wrexham on 3 April, but Max O’Leary was back in between the sticks on 6 April.

James Morrison brought the more experienced goalkeeper into his side, and it worked as they kept a clean sheet despite the hosts having 11 shots.

The fact that Griffiths has not locked down a first-team place will surely raise questions about his future at The Hawthorns.

The West Brom academy graduate will not want to be back-up, so West Brom News examines his contract situation.

What is Griffiths’ contract situation at West Brom?

Griffiths committed his future to West Brom in 2024, signing a new three-year deal with the Baggies.

However, that contract is nearing the final year, as it is set to run out in the summer of 2027, and no decision has been made on his future.

He could choose to move on to somewhere where he would be the undisputed number one when his deal expires.

What has Griffiths said about West Brom ambitions?

Griffiths has previously confirmed his ambition to be the starting goalkeeper for Albion, after he signed his most recent extension.

While acknowledging his wish, he was also realistic, highlighting Alex Palmer, the Baggies’ starting stopper at the time’s ability.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “My long-term goal is to become Albion’s No.1, however, I’ve got to say I thought Alex Palmer was outstanding last season – probably the best goalkeeper in the league.”

It would be a nice story if the homegrown talent could push on and forge a brilliant career with the club, but it may not be the right outcome.

Why O’Leary’s contract makes it an interesting situation

O’Leary’s contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign, which complicates matters significantly.

The Black Country club are yet to confirm whether the 29-year-old will be back for the 2026-27 season, which could open the door for Griffiths to start again.

However, the recruitment team and Morrison could choose to go in a different direction, having already seen what the academy graduate can do.

It is a difficult situation as neither goalkeeper has impressed, so the idea of a new number one coming in is not completely unfathomable for supporters.

Griffiths will likely still be in B71 next season, but whether he plays often and his deal is extended remains to be seen.
