West Brom: Eseosa Sule is James Morrison’s answer to crack rigid Preston North End defence
West Bromwich Albion‘s game against Preston North End this Saturday will be difficult for more reasons than one, but Eseosa Sule is surely giving James Morrison food for thought ahead of the clash.
The Baggies are set for an important trip to Deepdale this weekend, where a win could fend off major doubts about Championship relegation.
This week has seen Albion supporters given some worrying news about a potential PSR charge that could see the club have three points deducted this season, making a win over Preston all the more crucial.
One of the Black Country Club’s biggest issues heading into the game is their form in front of goal, and Morrison will be looking for solutions.
Sule will be an unknown identity to Paul Heckingbottom, and the youngster could be the perfect weapon for Morrison to deploy.

Eseosa Sule offers more threat than Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba
Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba has been disappointing since he returned to the Baggies on loan from Aston Villa in the winter, and has shown few signs of being a genuine attacking threat.
One of the biggest issues has been the lack of pace in wide areas, and that in turn has affected West Brom’s ability to break teams down.
| Area of game | Stats |
| Games | 6 |
| Goals | 4 |
| Dribble success | 63.6% |
| Pass success | 72.4% |
| Accurate long balls | 100% |
| FotMob rating | 7.17 |
However, as seen in the table above, Sule has been on fire for West Brom’s U21s in the Premier League 2, and has the ability to play either as a striker or on the wing, which can be a big plus for Morrison.
The Scottish sensation has a 7.17 FotMob rating, a 100 per cent long ball accuracy, and a tremendous 63.6 per cent dribble success, which has led to a promotion to the first team.
The 20-year-old only made his senior debut for Albion against Millwall last time out, but that game also finished 0-0 for the Baggies.

It’s clear that something needs to change in the final third, and giving Sule the license to attack could be the difference.
Preston will be hard to break down for West Brom; stats prove it
West Brom currently sit 13th in the Championship’s table for big chances created with 83, and are underperforming their xG by 9.9 goals.
The Baggies have failed to score in both of their last matches, and a game against a rigid Preston defence could make it three straight blanks in front of goal.
Preston’s defence per 90 and league rank:
- Interceptions: 8.80 (8th)
- Tackles: 16.3 (6th)
- Clearances: 34.0 (2nd)
- Saves per match: 3.10 (3rd)
As seen in the list above, Preston are always a hard team to break down depending on how they set up.
Sule could be the wildcard that Morrison needs to break it down, especially if chances are hard to come by after the first 45 this weekend.
