West Brom must show no fear as Preston test becomes sink-or-swim showdown amid PSR issues

West Bromwich Albion‘s game against Preston North End this Saturday could be telling of the club’s ability to see out the remaining Championship matches under the pressure of a possible points deduction.

Lots has changed since Albion’s last game, with the Baggies now in with the potential of having a relegation-threatening points deduction sanctioned by the EFL for breaching PSR limits.

It’s not yet known when the EFL could impose this points ban if West Brom are found guilty, as a hearing over the matter is set to take place before the end of April, with James Morrison having to remain focused on Preston next.

The Black Country Club will travel to Deepdale on Saturday to face Paul Heckingbottom’s Preston, and Albion cannot show their vulnerability.

West Brom are in good form under Morrison, and haven’t lost in seven matches, but following the recent PSR update, it’ll either make the players step up or fold under the added pressure.

These stats show West Brom need to show more ruthless nature vs Preston

The EFL could cause mass confusion with West Brom’s points deduction, especially if they dock points after the conclusion of this season.

Regardless, if the Baggies were to win each of their remaining four games, they’d probably be safe from relegation.

West Brom have won just once in their last four visits to Deepdale, but did record a big 4-0 win against the Lilywhites on their own turf just two seasons ago.

Morrison will need more of that clinical edge from his side, who have failed to score in both of their last two games.

West Brom have scored six goals in their last five games from a total of 79 shots, which works out at a 7.6 per cent goal conversion rate.

The Baggies are currently two points from Oxford United, who occupy the final Championship relegation spot, but a suggested points deduction of three or even four points would see Morrison’s side drop into the bottom three.

Preston are nothing to be scared of; here’s why

Preston have enjoyed a decent run of form in their last four games, winning two and drawing two. However, the Lilywhites have nothing to fight for, and are not in danger of losing out on a promotion place, the same way they are not at risk of being relegated like Albion.

They have kept just nine clean sheets this season, and are third-bottom in the division for xG conceded at a total of 62.6.

Last time out, they started a 4-4-2 formation, which is a similar setup to what Morrison is currently deploying with the Black Country Club.

Either way, Preston are there for the taking, and what might help get West Brom over the line is the will to win, if they have it after the latest developments.
