James Morrison’s imminent full-time West Brom appointment raises long-term questions
James Morrison is reportedly set to be offered the West Bromwich Albion head coach role on a full-time basis, but that may concern some supporters.
The Baggies were in desperate need of some form when they sacked Eric Ramsay, as Shilen Patel’s left-field appointment failed straight after the departure of Ryan Mason.
Morrison was the go-to man to bring in ahead of what was a Championship relegation battle, which has now been settled before the final day.
The interim Albion boss has been simply phenomenal at galvanising the squad, battling against a points deduction from the EFL, while keeping the Black Country Club up.
Morrison’s appointment may be confirmed before the end of the season, but there are clear long-term questions that will be asked at West Brom.

Does James Morrison have what it takes to succeed at West Brom?
West Brom’s survival has been confirmed, and it’s hard to argue against the fact that it’s all down to Morrison.
The group hasn’t changed, but the mentality has, as the former Baggies playmaker was able to instil a fighting will inside the players.
| In charge (interim basis) | Win percentage | Points per game |
| Feb 2026 – Now | 42% | 1.8 |
| Jan 2026 – Jan 2026 | 0% | 0.0 (Lost FA Cup game to Norwich City) |
| April 2025 – June 2025 | 50% | 2.0 |
Morrison has won 42 per cent of his 11 games in charge of the Baggies as interim boss, and is currently on a 10-game unbeaten run.
During that period, Albion have won four games, drawn six, scored 13, and only conceded four.

However, the big question is, how will Morrison cope as the main man in the hot seat for the long-term?
The Englishman doesn’t have a real identity, and stripping things back to basics has been the key. That can’t be the case next season, as passion and desire only get you so far.
Does Morrison decision mirror similar disaster Swansea faced?
West Brom could very well announce Morrison’s permanent stay before the Sheffield Wednesday game, as the Baggies may end the season on a high note at Hillsborough.
However, next season Morrison will have lost all the momentum that has been built this campaign, and it’ll be another rebuild where big transfers will be hard to come by.
Former Swansea boss Alan Sheehan had two stints in charge of the Welsh giants, with his performance as interim boss at the end of last season helping him land the job permanently.
However, the young Irishman was exposed early in this season for a lack of identity and was therefore sacked in November.
Sheehan finished his time at Swansea with a 44 per cent win ratio, and fans of the club have already warned West Brom supporters of what could be around the corner with Morrison.
