George Campbell is my West Brom signing of the season as 2025-26 awards issued

George Campbell is my West Bromwich Albion signing of the 2025-26 season.

And breathe West Brom fans. The 2025-26 season is in the books, and it will go down in Hawthorns history as being one of the most dramatic and eventful in Albion history.

Three different managers, an EFL charge and subsequent points deduction, a 13-game winless run in the Championship, and the appointment of a Baggies hero to come to the rescue in James Morrison.

Now that it’s over, Albion supporters can afford themselves a chuckle at all that their team have put them through over the past year, and now under Morrison, a brighter future appears to be ahead.

So, with 46 games played and Championship safety secured, I’ve decided to look back over the course of the 2025-26 campaign to hand out some awards across this West Brom team.

Callum Styles wins my West Brom Player of the Season award

West Brom’s Supporters’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season recipient; it would only be right to hand Callum Styles the hat-trick.

Indeed, the 26-year-old do-it-all defender is my West Brom Player of the Season winner, and I don’t think that will garner much controversy.

Styles is a managers’ dream, with the Hungarian international the type who can be called upon to plug any gap and play any position, and can be entrusted to perform.

He’s the epitome of a seven out of 10 every week, seldom letting his side down and always giving everything to the Albion cause.

As per FotMob, his 217 duels won rank him in the top 3.4 percentile of Championship left-backs in 2025-26, which is the position where he’s most commonly been deployed this past season.

Meanwhile, his 91 tackles rank him in the top 4.3 percentile of his positional peers in the second tier, whilst his 172 recoveries place him among the leading six percentile respectively.

Thankfully, he’s contracted at The Hawthorns until 2028, as his 2025-26 campaign is sure to see him draw transfer interest this summer.

Campbell takes home my West Brom signing of the season award

Now let’s move over to my West Brom Signing of the Season award, and I’ve got Campbell’s name inscribed here.

The 24-year-old arrived from Canadian outfit Montreal in the 2025-26 summer transfer window, which was reported to have set Albion back as little as £1million.

Celtic are reportedly interested in signing Campbell this summer, and that doesn’t come as a surprise, as the big centre-back was immense for Albion this past term.

Prior to the arrival of Danny Imray in the winter window, Campbell had to spend a significant amount of time playing out of position at right-back through the opening stages of the season.

Despite that, he was still able to perform extremely well under those circumstances, holding down the fort in a way that many others in that situation – in his debut season in English football no less – wouldn’t have been able to.

He also added four goals and two assists to the cause, and if he is to leave this summer, he’s sure to bank Albion a significant transfer profit.

Gilchrist is my most disappointing West Brom player in 2025-26

Finishing with the unwanted award of West Brom’s Most Disappointing Player of the Season, there was a few candidates for this one.

Josh Maja‘s four league goals from 40 Championship games was a very underwhelming campaign from him, but his form and performances did start to pick up following the appointment of Morrison.

Tammer Bany has had another nightmare campaign with injuries, and whilst that is of course disappointing, giving him this award would feel unfairly harsh, so I’m not going to.

Charlie Taylor and Josh Griffiths were other strong contenders, but for me, I’ve been most disappointed with Alfie Gilchrist in 2025-26.

A summer signing from Chelsea, who he’d played a handful of Premier League games for and having arrived off the back of a good 2024-25 season with Sheffield United, Gilchrist looked to be a very shrewd capture by Albion.

However, the 22-year-old played just 663 minutes of league football in 2025-26, starting only eight times and was largely resigned to being an unused substitute most weeks.

There is still time for Gilchrist to become a success at The Hawthorns, and that might indeed be the case under the full-time management of Morrison moving forward.

But, for a player with his pedigree and potential, his debut season for the Baggies was so disappointing, and if Albion sign Imray on a permanent deal, his prospects for an improved 2026-27 campaign will surely take a further dent.
