Mikey Johnston is due to return to training at West Bromwich Albion ahead of pre-season.

While his season-ending injury prevented him from making much of an impact under James Morrison, the Ireland international still deserves his plaudits for his contributions throughout the campaign.

Despite missing 12 games, he managed 11 goal involvements in the Championship, demonstrating the quality that he has to offer.

However, when it was confirmed that his season was over, fears started to emerge as to whether he had played his final game for the Baggies.

Johnston is due to return to training with West Brom in June, when his future will likely be decided.

What we know about Mikey Johnston’s contract situation

Johnston had been heavily linked with an exit from West Brom over the last 12 months, with Flamengo one of those who had looked into a deal.

The Ireland international remained at The Hawthorns, where he still has two years left on his current contract.

Relegation would have almost certainly spelt the end for his time with the Baggies, though their ability to avoid it may have boosted their chances of retaining his services.

Given the positive atmosphere since Morrison took over, there will be plenty of optimism that Johnston will stay beyond the summer.

West Brom have clear call to make with Johnston

Given what he achieved this season, there is no world in which West Brom should be considering an exit for Johnston.

Instead, the main focus should be to build a team around the 27-year-old.

Having created 56 chances in the Championship, Johnston showcased his ability to be a difference maker for West Brom, and adding more quality in the final third around him will be key to progressing.

Barney Stewart has been linked with a move to The Hawthorns, showcasing the fact that the Baggies look set to do just that.
