Mikey Johnston In Focus
Analysing the impact of Mikey Johnston at West Bromwich Albion, including his Championship statistics, market value, and contract status.
Scout Report
Flair & Creativity
Johnston can frustrate supporters at times, but the numbers suggest he is still the most creative outlet in the team – with his nine Championship assists attesting to that. When on form, he can isolate defenders and carve out opportunities for his team-mates from the flanks.
Technical Profile
Johnston plays predominantly as an inverted winger, who has good ball control and likes to cut inside onto his favoured foot. He likes to put balls into the box, and his turn of pace can make him difficult for defenders to mark.
Tactical Role
Generally deployed on the left, Johnston is tasked with being the primary playmaker from out wide.
Mikey Johnston: West Brom’s mercurial talent
Mikey Johnston made a fantastic impact when he first arrived at West Brom on loan from Celtic in the winter transfer window of the 2023-24 campaign. The winger scored seven goals in 18 Championship appearances, before joining on a four-year contract later that summer. He struggled to replicate that initial form last term, though, and supporters can get frustrated by his inconsistency. This term, he has provided nine Championship assists, good numbers for a team struggling, and a late season injury is far from ideal in the fight against relegation.
M. Johnston in Profile: Contract Status and Market Value
Johnston remains one of Albion’s main creative outlets, and has nine Championship assists before his recent injury blow. According to Transfermarkt, his current market value is £3.46million, but given Albion paid significantly more than that any offers of that value wouldn’t be entertained.
Signed on a permanent four-year deal from Celtic in the summer of 2024, Johnston is secured to The Hawthorns until the summer of 2028. This long-term commitment means that if any suitors were interested, the Baggies have some protection. Though with only two years remaining, if good offers did come in they may have to be considered.
If the Baggies drop to League One, keeping a player of Johnston’s calibre may prove tricky. While his contract length does offer protection, he would likely have designs on staying at least in the second tier and West Brom might have a decision to make if offers arrived.
Johnston is an important part of the Baggies’ attacking line-up. He can be maddeningly frustrating, but he does have decent numbers creatively – especially in a team that has struggled. His injury sustained late in the 2025-26 campaign is definitely a blow in the fight against relegation.
How big of a blow is Mikey Johnston’s injury?
Has Mikey Johnston played his last West Brom game?
Right now, that is the million-dollar question. Johnston suffered a stress fracture in his ankle and will likely play no further part this season. It is a significant blow to Albion, who are still fighting a relegation battle in the Championship. Some observers believe Johnston is likely to attract significant interest in the summer, and the Baggies may have a decision on their hands if any good offers come in, with Johnston about to enter the final two years of his contract at The Hawthorns.
