West Brom can’t make Alex Mowatt mistake as James Morrison decision pending

West Bromwich Albion can’t afford to make Alex Mowatt their new captain.

James Morrison has a big decision on his hands, after Jed Wallace left the club, after holding the armband since August 2023.

Mowatt is an obvious contender for the position, given that he was the vice-captain last season and has plenty of experience under his belt.

However, the Baggies must resist the temptation to give him the biggest leadership role at the club, and must hand it to someone else.

Mowatt’s desire and performances on the pitch are not under question at West Brom, but there is one reason why handing him the responsibility would be a mistake.

Why shouldn’t Mowatt be West Brom captain?

Mowatt’s contract at West Brom expires in the summer of 2027, so he should not be given the captain’s armband.

If he was, Albion would be looking for another new skipper after next season, if a new deal is not reached between the two parties.

They should avoid that dilemma and just give the responsibility to another player, one who is fully committed to the cause.

Who should be new West Brom captain?

George Campbell leaps off the page as the new Baggies skipper, as he was a beacon of consistency last season.

The American defender made 41 appearances in his first season at The Hawthorns, and he led by example on the pitch, so he could be rewarded for that.

However, speculation over his future could also take him out of the running, despite his contract running until 2029.

Another contender for the armband could be Jayson Molumby, as he is a firm fan favourite and he has been a key part of Morrison’s revolution in the Black Country.

However, his disciplinary record is questionable, as he can lose his head when things are not going the right way.

Nat Phillips is probably one who would put his name in the hat, he has significant experience fighting for promotion and at higher levels than that, so he would be a natural fit in a leadership position.

Morrison has to make the right decision, so he has to take his time to think about it, but Mowatt should not be in contention due to his situation.
