Toby Collyer's injury record examined as he closes in on West Brom return
Toby Collyer could be set to complete unfinished business at West Bromwich Albion.
After joining West Brom on an initial season-long loan deal last summer, Collyer's time at The Hawthorns was cut short.
It was on 1 January this year that the midfielder was recalled to Manchester United after sustaining a calf injury.
Collyer made 12 Championship appearances for West Brom last season, providing one assist in a 2-1 win over Preston last October.
He would head back out on loan to Hull for the second half of last term, but could now be set for a permanent Old Trafford exit this summer.
The Baggies may well be his destination to, but should Albion chiefs be concerned about his injury record before splashing out to sign him?
How bad were Toby Collyer's Hull injuries as West Brom return mooted?
West Brom have reportedly made an approach to re-sign Collyer this week, as he enters the final 12 months of his United contract.
As a result, there's a chance for Albion to acquire his services permanently for a reasonable price.
But as highly-rated as the midfielder is, his injury history is a sizeable red flag, and one that could have a big impact on his career down the line.
His most recent setback came with Hull, when his season was ended thanks to a twisted ankle he picked up during an April training session.
That wasn't the only fitness issue he suffered whilst on loan with the Tigers last season either.
Indeed, the 22-year-old collected a hamstring tear mere days after his Hull debut in February, which sidelined him for the best part of a month.
So, with multiple injuries picked up during his time at Hull, let's take a look back on his fitness record with West Brom last term.
Collyer's nightmare West Brom injury spell revisited
There was a lot of excitement around The Hawthorns upon Collyer's loan signing, having turned out 13 times for Man United in 2024-25.
An England youth international, he unfortunately didn't really get the chance to show his full potential in B71.
His first problem arose in October last year, where he was forced off in the aforementioned win over Preston with a hamstring problem.
Collyer missed the next four games as a result, but it wouldn't be long before his watershed West Brom injury occurred.
After just 11 minutes in a 1-1 draw with Birmingham in late November, he was forced off with a significant calf problem.
That required a recovery period of eight weeks, and subsequently ended his Albion loan stint as United summoned him back to Old Trafford.
Injuries have largely defined his loan spells, but does Collyer's injury troubles extend to his time with Man United too?
Collyer's injury issues stem from Man United
Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of Collyer's injury problems so far in his career is the niggling nature of them.
Of course, that's not saying one big lengthier injury would be better, but working back to fitness only to get injured again soon after must be very disheartening.
It was like this during his breakthrough 2024-25 season at Old Trafford too, where he wasn't able to stay fit for an extended period of time.
His first injury that term happened in October 2024, where he missed a month of the season under interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Then in February 2025, he again suffered a minor setback that curtailed his availability for three weeks.
Finally, he missed 43 days between April and May due to a leg injury, ensuring his 2024-25 season ended having made 13 appearances for United.
So, should West Brom progress with a deal for Collyer, he will still have to prove he can stay injury-free for an extended period of time.
If not, that would be a desperate shame for a midfielder who clearly has so much talent and room for improvement.
