Barney Stewart has done his chances of a West Brom start against Birmingham City no harm at all.

Stewart has so far had to settle for substitute appearances under James Morrison in the Championship following his £1.3million move from Scottish side Falkirk in the summer.

Across his seven appearances in the league this season, he has been on the field for a total of 71 minutes.

The 22-year-old has more of a chance to shine across the past few weeks on international duty with Scotland Under-21s.

Stewart scored a couple of goals in last week's 5-2 win over Azerbaijan Under-21s.

And he looked just as impressive in Tuesday night's 2-0 win away in Bulgaria, with his performance giving Morrison plenty of food for thought.

How did Barney Stewart perform vs Bulgaria U21s?

Stewart did not look back following his strong showing last time out for Scotland U21s.

The 22-year-old blasted a low shot into the back of the net from 25 yards out against Bulgaria with 22 minutes played.

After scoring three times in two matches, Stewart then teed up Bobby Wales to add a second for Scotland in their latest victory.

Stewart played the full 90 minutes, which usually would cause concern for club managers, but in this case Morrison will be grateful.

Could Stewart now be in contention for a start vs Birmingham?

Word is that Morrison was not happy with Aune Heggebo's performance against Wolves in Albion's final game before the three-week break.

Heggebo was poor, as were pretty much all of his teammates on a disappointing afternoon at Molineux.

With two goals in eight appearances in all competitions this season, Heggebo's starting spot is not nailed on.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan, who has five goals in nine appearances, is very much certain of a start this coming weekend.

But as good as Stewart has been on international duty, Morrison will likely stick to what he knows against Birmingham.

Stewart's chance will arrive from the bench, though, and he needs to ensure he takes it in order to make himself undroppable.
