West Brom Women wouldn't have thought the signing of Naomi Powell would cause such a stir.

The Baggies' ladies side had been busy this summer, having sealed four signings already.

Harriet Grimshaw, Lucy Day, Abbey Jones and Rhianne Rush had already come through the doors in B71.

That has quickly become five with the addition of the 27-year-old central midfielder from Portland Thorns.

On the face of it, the ex-Hearts ace looks to be a positive addition to add to the middle of the park under Martyn Irvine.

It actually caused a circus on social media before it was even announced, but not for the reason you would think.

West Brom fans caught out by Naomi Powell signing

After a busy start to the summer window, things have gone quiet for James Morrison's side.

Barney Stewart, Carter Pinnington, Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Matt Ingram all came in within a busy week at The Hawthorns.

The incoming deals have cooled off since then, although Danny Imray and Cameron Archer have been strongly linked, as covered by West Brom News.

It also appears Conor Townsend could soon be returning as a free agent.

For that exact reason, supporters on social media were left excited on Thursday when a rumour emerged suggesting that a confirmed transfer was soon-to-be announced.

Photographers were said to be at the training ground to get shots before a move was revealed to fans.

That left many in B71 to assume a deal for Archer or Imray was ready to be confirmed.

Instead, West Brom Women revealed the signing of Powell, which caught many people out.

That sparked a bit of a meltdown for many and plenty of discussion on social media.

There was still a welcoming atmosphere towards the new midfielder as you would expect, just not what many were waiting for.

West Brom surely have the green light to agree Cameron Archer transfer - here's why

When could West Brom sign Cameron Archer?

The Baggies are certainly interested in signing the Southampton man this summer.

There is a desperate need for a new striker option after the departures of Josh Maja, Daryl Dike and Karlan Grant.

Stewart and Morgan have come in, but a more senior option feels like a need, not a want.

A swoop for Archer would make total sense, especially with a deal potentially there to be done for just £3million.

That could soon see Morrison step up efforts to sign the ex-Aston Villa man as a striker is said to be his priority.

A deal hinges on reaching an agreement with Southampton, but it could be accelerated if that is done soon.
