What West Brom's win vs Rotherham told us about Jayson Molumby's future

West Bromwich Albion beat Rotherham United in the Carabao Cup without the help of Jayson Molumby from the off.

The Baggies ran out 4-1 victors after smashing the Millers on their own turf, with Jimmy-Jay Morgan at the double, Harry Whitwell on the scoresheet and a debut goal for Felix Horn Myhre.

The Albion are in the hat for the next round of the Carabao Cup, though James Morrison made a couple of interesting selections.

One being the decision to start Alex Mowatt over Molumby, as the former was benched in the Black Country Club's final pre-season game against Peterborough United.

It appears Morrison is going to stick to his favoured 4-4-2 formation for now, which requires two central midfielders.

However, the call to start Molumby on the bench could have a deeper meaning than on the surface of things for West Brom.

Throughout pre-season, it always seemed like Morrison was going to go with a midfield two of Molumby and Ousmane Diakite for this campaign.

Mowatt is said to have a host of Championship clubs interested in his signature, and initially took a backseat at The Hawthorns after the arrival of Morrison, before playing in the final few games of the 2025-26 season.

But after starting against Rotherham, the 31-year-old may yet have a future in the Black Country.

Horn Myhre was subbed on at halftime before Molumby, who was then brought on for Mowatt in the 73rd minute.

The only logical explanation for this is that Molumby's links to Wrexham could have developed even further.

How much could West Brom get for Molumby?

The timing of Molumby being benched makes it seem like there is ongoing talks about his departure behind the scenes, whether that be Wrexham or another club.

The Irish international will want to be a guaranteed first-team starter, and Albion's opening Championship game against Norwich City will be a good indication of where the player is at with possibly leaving.

Molumby's contract runs until 2028, which means this summer is the optimal time for the Baggies to cash in, if they don't see the midfielder in their long-term plans.

Transfermarkt value the 27-year-old at just over £2.5million, which could be a decent fee for Shilen Patel to pocket this summer.

Time will tell if this exit has legs.
