West Brom to learn from Torbjorn Heggem example as George Campbell exit on cards

West Bromwich Albion could see George Campbell depart in the upcoming transfer window, just like Torbjorn Heggem left last summer.

The Baggies sold the Norway international for around £9million to Bologna after just one season at The Hawthorns.

Celtic have now set their sights on Campbell and it could potentially take silly money to prise the American from the Albion.

One could argue that Heggem’s departure did more harm than good at the Black Country outfit, who went from being contenders for the play-offs to a relegation battle this season.

Campbell’s exit from The Hawthorns may represent a step backwards for Bilkul Football and they will surely take lessons from the impact of the 27-year-old Norwegian centre-back’s sale.

George Campbell influential at West Brom

Campbell has arguably been West Brom’s best player this season, playing a key role in multiple positions in the backline.

The 24-year-old started the season at right-back, but has cemented his place at centre-back over the last few months.

It would make sense for the Baggies to build their team around the USMNT international rather than seeing another pivotal member of the squad depart.

The Albion surely need consistency if James Morrison has any chance of succeeding at The Hawthorns and Shilen Patel can’t keep on selling the best assets in B71 and expecting the team to be competitive in the Championship.

Shilen Patel has another transfer priority at The Hawthorns

Danny Imray has been a game-changer at West Brom ever since signing on loan from Crystal Palace in the winter transfer window.

The 22-year-old has added much-needed energy and creativity from right-back and his permanent arrival at The Hawthorns would be a no-brainer.

Bilkul are under extreme pressure from the fans to deliver success at the Baggies and they can’t oversee any more setbacks after taking the club backwards in the 2025-26 campaign.

The upcoming transfer window presents an opportunity for Patel to make an initial impression on fans, but it remains to be seen whether the B71 club’s finances permit significant spending.
